Lord’s Pavilion Sparks Debate Over Syrian Art Exhibition

Published on

Marylebone Cricket Club’s iconic Lord’s ground hosts a new exhibition of Syrian paintings in its historic pavilion, intended to express solidarity with the Middle Eastern nation. Some members voice strong objections, accusing the display of politicizing the venue.

Member Protests Politicization

The artwork appeared last week as the cricket season began. One member described the paintings as underwhelming and suggested they serve to promote a progressive image for the club. Author and longtime MCC member Michael Henderson posted a signed note on the pavilion noticeboard, stating: ‘Members may have noted the daubs upstairs and the club’s endorsement of “creativity” and “solidarity”. “Solidarity” with whom? The human race, perhaps. We can all agree on that. But this “exhibition” is nudging us towards another view; a partial one. This is meant to be a cricket club.’

The club has navigated similar cultural clashes recently. Modernizers pushed to rename the Warner Stand over historical ties to the slave trade. Former MCC president Sir Stephen Fry criticized some members as ‘fleshy white Englishmen’ and ‘stinking’ of privilege. Committees also attempted to remove the Eton versus Harrow match and Varsity fixture from the schedule citing elitism, but members voted to retain them.

One member links the exhibition to Emma John, chair of the MCC’s heritage and collections committee. Upon joining in 2018, John declared her aim to ‘fight to influence the MCC’s culture from inside’ on diversity and inclusivity matters.

Comedian Baffled by Kanye West’s ‘Betrayal’ List

Stand-up comic Jarlath Regan expresses confusion after troubled rapper Kanye West, now performing as Ye, included him in an online list of ‘betrayers.’ The 48-year-old artist, recently banned from entering Britain by the Home Office, posted: ‘I am in pain that no one person can fix the betrayal,’ naming figures like ex-wife Kim Kardashian, Donald Trump, LeBron James, and Regan.

Regan responds: ‘I was as surprised as you. Not entirely sure what I did to make the list.’

Actor Hugh Bonneville returns as hapless Head of Values Ian Fletcher in the BBC mockumentary W1A’s new 2026 series, set during the football World Cup. He reveals: ‘It’s all shot in a chaotic order, nothing makes sense each day so, for that reason, every single tea break was spent running lines, or in my case apologising to my colleagues for not knowing mine.’

Anthea Turner Delays Wedding for Renovations

Former Blue Peter presenter Anthea Turner, 65, postpones her wedding to socialite Mark Armstrong due to home improvements. After three prior delays, she explains: ‘We need to sort it out, and we absolutely will, but we’ve got a lounge renovation that’s just about starting. The problem is that we already feel like we’re married. Although it would be nice to get married some day, it’s not our priority. But it will happen some day.’

He served as custodian of National Trust’s Hatchlands Park, home to a portrait believed by many to be the only lifetime depiction of Shakespeare.
