Rory McIlroy opens up about the early morning text messages he receives from Tiger Woods, which often arrive at 4 a.m. and frustrate his wife, Erica.
Woods’ Insomnia and Gym Sessions
Tiger Woods battles insomnia, likely from intense training, prompting McIlroy to urge him to ease up. Woods frequently texts McIlroy at dawn, asking, “Up lifting. What are you doing?” McIlroy recounts how these messages disrupt his sleep, leading Erica to grow irritated. “He’s texting me in the middle of the night,” McIlroy notes, “and I was like, ‘Tiger’s in the gym.'”
McIlroy’s Deep Admiration for Woods
McIlroy, 14 years Woods’ junior, has long idolized the golf legend. He describes Woods as an intriguing figure with multiple facets: thoughtful, intelligent, and perpetually learning. “He can’t sleep, so that’s all he does—he reads and educates himself,” McIlroy says.
McIlroy feels fortunate to know Woods closely. “He has been an idol and a hero of mine,” he states. “His passion for the game shines through, and he respects the PGA Tour’s legacy. His guidance benefits all players—it’s an honor to collaborate with him.”
Woods Misses 2026 Masters
As McIlroy defends his 2025 Masters title at Augusta National, Woods sits out the 2026 event. The champion reflects on the absence of icons like Woods and Phil Mickelson. “I’ve thought about it more than the food,” McIlroy admits. “It’s a shame, but hopefully they’ll return soon.”
