Ipswich Secure Top-Two Spot with 2-0 Win Over Norwich

Published on

Ipswich bolsters its automatic promotion push in the Championship with a resilient 2-0 victory over rivals Norwich at Carrow Road. The result catapults Town into the top two, with two games in hand on key competitors. First-half strikes from Jaden Philogene on a disputed penalty and George Hirst deliver a long-awaited double against their East Anglian adversaries.

Norwich controls possession but faces a rock-solid defensive effort from Ipswich, which restricts prime scoring opportunities to a minimum. The loss extinguishes Norwich’s play-off aspirations, yet a projected top-10 finish marks a stunning recovery from their early bottom-three struggles.

First-Half Drama Unfolds

Ipswich seizes the lead after 11 minutes in contentious style. Anis Ben Slimane unintentionally clips Jack Taylor while clearing in the penalty area, leading referee Anthony Backhouse to point to the spot. Philogene slots home past goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic, who guesses the wrong way.

Kovacevic then tips over Hirst’s header from a deep free kick. Norwich ramps up pressure, dominating the ball in a high-tempo clash but generating few clear threats. Pelle Mattsson’s thunderous effort represents their best moment, easily gathered by Christian Walton low to his right.

Kovacevic denies Hirst again with a sharp foot save near halftime. Ipswich responds instantly, doubling the advantage. Darnell Furlong’s long throw from the left finds a flick-on, leaving Hirst free to volley in and establish a deceptive two-goal lead.

Second-Half Intensity Builds

Norwich responds with attacking changes at the interval, introducing Mo Toure and Oscar Schwartau. Slimane tests Walton on a swift break. Toure scuffs wide from a favorable spot. Former Norwich man Marcelino Nunez enters for Ipswich, heightening the electric atmosphere.

Town threatens a third on the counter, but Kovacevic foils Taylor with a superb stop. Nunez picks up a booking and exits after a nervy stint, preserving Ipswich’s clean sheet and promotion momentum.
