Storm Coach’s Intense Dressing Room Confrontation

Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy unleashed a heated halftime tirade against forward Joe Chan during his team’s 38-14 defeat to the New Zealand Warriors on Saturday night. The outburst, captured on camera, saw Bellamy repeatedly point and gesture at Chan before substituting him just five minutes into the second half.

The loss marked the Storm’s fourth consecutive defeat, dropping them to 13th on the NRL ladder. It also handed the Warriors their first victory in Melbourne since 2014.

Johnson Defends Chan as Team Scapegoat

Warriors legend and TV commentator Shaun Johnson condemned Bellamy’s approach, arguing that Chan became an unfair target on a night when the entire Storm squad underperformed.

“Joe Chan was the scapegoat tonight,” Johnson stated. “Those pictures don’t look good. I’ve been in a similar position where it’s just not clicking for you and you try harder but it snowballs and it becomes worse, and you think on the sideline wondering if I’m the only reason for the team’s poor performance. But he wasn’t the only reason. He wasn’t alone. It was right across the board.”

Fox Sports host Yvonne Sampson echoed the sentiment, noting, “He was the whipping boy tonight. He copped it from Bellamy and his teammates and he was dejected.”

Storm great Cooper Cronk highlighted defensive lapses by superstars Cameron Munster and Harry Grant, predicting they would face Bellamy’s wrath for appearing “lazy” in defense.

Bellamy Calls for Accountability and Changes

In his post-match press conference, Bellamy addressed the team’s tackling woes, following their previous 50-point concession to Penrith. “We done a lot of work on our defence this week. May as well have gone to the pub and had a couple of beers,” he remarked.

“There’s a lot of things going wrong so we need to have a good, hard look at ourselves. We’re all going to take responsibility, and if there’s people not doing their jobs properly, well, we need to make changes. That’s with staff as well.”

This skid represents the Storm’s first four straight losses since 2022. Bellamy, known for his passionate sideline demeanor and nicknamed ‘Bellyache,’ previously reflected on similar moments captured in the documentary Inside the Storm. “I definitely forgot I had the microphone on at times,” he admitted. “I wish I could take back some things I said to the coaching staff about the players, but I guess it was heat-of-the-moment stuff.”
