Trump Holds Economy Crisis Talks as Iran War Pushes Gas to $4.20

Published on

Americans face mounting financial strain from the ongoing conflict with Iran, with midterm elections approaching in November. Gas prices have surged to $4.20 per gallon, an increase of more than a dollar since the war escalated, intensifying pressure on President Trump to resolve the situation.

Rising Economic Pressures

Regions like Asia depend heavily on the Strait of Hormuz, where one-fifth of global crude oil passes. President Trump declared a U.S. blockade of the strait on Sunday after Vice President JD Vance’s negotiations in Pakistan collapsed, as Iran refuses to abandon its nuclear program.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously cautioned about the economic risks to Asia and Europe from the conflict’s fallout. During an interview with Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo, Trump offered little reassurance on gas prices ahead of the midterms, stating, “It could be the same or maybe a little bit higher, but it should be around the same.”

Trump added that the war will not drag on much longer, describing Iran as “wiped out,” and criticized U.S. media for portraying Iran’s military performance positively.

Failed Negotiations and Blockade

Face-to-face talks between U.S. and Iranian representatives in Pakistan ended abruptly after 21 hours on Sunday, casting doubt on a fragile two-week ceasefire. U.S. officials attribute the breakdown to Iran’s unwillingness to forgo nuclear weapons, while Iranian officials point to Washington without detailing issues.

In a Truth Social post Sunday morning, Trump noted that U.S. representatives—Vice President Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner—developed rapport with Iranian counterparts Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, Abbas Araghchi, and Ali Bagheri. However, he emphasized Iran’s inflexibility on nuclear ambitions, declaring, “Iran Will Never Have A Nuclear Weapon!”

The ceasefire expires on April 22, with Pakistani mediators calling for its extension. Trump announced the Hormuz blockade via Truth Social, stating: “Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.”

He directed the Navy to interdict vessels paying tolls to Iran in international waters, warning, “No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas.” Trump further stated, “Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!”

U.S. Central Command forces prepare to clear mines in the strait, with two guided-missile destroyers already operating there.

Domestic Political Fallout

A recent poll of more than 1,000 registered voters reveals Trump’s approval rating at 43 percent, down three points from 46 percent in late March, with a margin of error of 3.1 percent. This marks his second-lowest rating in his second term, following a mid-March low of 42 percent.

Inflation and living costs top voter concerns, with 43 percent citing them as the primary reason for disapproval. The poll follows Trump’s announcement of a two-week ceasefire after threats to annihilate Iran’s infrastructure.

White House spokesman Kush Desai noted that Trump has addressed short-term war disruptions, adding that the administration collaborates with the private sector to lessen impacts.
