Zermatt’s McDonald’s: World’s Priciest Fast Food at £40 for Two

Published on

A McDonald’s branch in Switzerland stands out as one of the world’s most expensive, where lunch for two people often exceeds £40. Visitors frequently express shock at the steep prices in this popular ski destination.

Location and Charming Ambiance

Situated in Zermatt, a renowned village and ski resort in the Swiss Alps, this outlet serves as the gateway to the Matterhorn, one of Europe’s highest ski areas. The restaurant occupies a traditional Alpine chalet-style building with wooden interiors that create a cozy log cabin atmosphere.

Unique Menu Offerings

The menu mirrors standard McDonald’s items but includes Swiss specialties like the M burger, featuring two beef patties, melted cheese, lettuce, and crispy onions. Other highlights encompass chicken wings, pepper potatoes, chicken paprika burger, Big Tasty, Nutella Sundae, Swiss Chocolate Pie, McPops, and a gluten-free selection.

Comparing Sky-High Prices

Prices significantly surpass those in the UK. A Big Mac costs 7.20 CHF (£6.80), compared to £5.11. A 20-piece McNuggets sharebox reaches 18.80 CHF (£17.74), versus £8.79 in the UK. Fizzy drinks nearly double UK prices, and large fries hit 6.40 CHF (£6), well above the UK’s £2.59.

Visitor Experiences

TikTok user Abbey Sadleir shared a receipt from her visit, showing 53 CHF (£50) for two meals, an extra veggie burger, and dessert. Cameron Guzzo spent $54 (under £40) on two meals, including a Friends meal with Royal Bacon Cheeseburger, fries, drink, M burger, pepper potatoes, apple juice, and espresso. He remarked, “It’s decent, but it’s still just McDonald’s, definitely not worth $54.”

Danielle Outdoors noted the “cosy chalet vibes from the outside were cute,” praising unique local items. She added, “The Big Mac meal on its own was over $16 (£11), and I think we spent $50 (£36.86) for two people, which is crazy.” However, she pointed out, “While this is the most expensive McDonald’s, it’s actually one of the most affordable places to eat in Zermatt.”

Broad Context

With over 44,000 global locations, confirming the absolute priciest remains challenging amid rising costs and franchise pricing flexibility. In contrast, the world’s largest McDonald’s near Disneyland Paris spans 2,000 square meters across three floors, seating 600 with modern features like self-service kiosks, a panoramic elevator, McCafe, QR code ordering, made-to-order food, multilingual staff, and a three-story indoor play area inspired by Disney magic.
