Fans Defend Madonna’s Epic Coachella Cameo with Sabrina Carpenter Amid Ageism Backlash

Published on

Madonna fans swiftly rally to support the 67-year-old icon after online criticism targeted her surprise performance alongside Sabrina Carpenter at Coachella. The pop legend joined the 26-year-old star for a high-energy duet, drawing praise for matching her younger counterpart’s pace despite cruel calls for retirement.

Madonna’s Dynamic Stage Return

Madonna made a dramatic entrance toward the end of Carpenter’s headline set on Friday, emerging from beneath the stage in striking purple lingerie. She performed snippets of her 1990 hit ‘Vogue’ and 1989 classic ‘Like a Prayer,’ backed by heavy pre-recorded vocals. The duo moved to a stage extension into the crowd, where Madonna addressed the audience: “Wow, thank you… Sabrina, thank you so much for inviting me on your show.”

She urged unity, stating, “Let’s try to be together. Let’s try to avoid disagreements. And to that point, the great thing about music is that it brings people together.” Carpenter replied, “No thanks needed, Madonna,” as they held hands. Madonna reflected on her history, noting, “20 years ago today I performed at Coachella. I was in the dance tent, and it was the first time I performed Confessions on a Dance Floor part one in America. It was such a thrill—and it’s a thrill to be back. It’s a full circle moment, very meaningful for me.”

Backlash and Lip-Syncing Claims

Critics online labeled the performance as evidence of lip-syncing, dubbing Madonna a ‘fraud’ ahead of her upcoming album Confessions II, set for release on July 3. Some referenced Elton John’s past remarks from 2012, where he called out lip-syncing artists and described Madonna harshly, reigniting memories of their feud that ended in 2023.

Detractors also targeted her age, with comments like, “An old woman can still dream…. But Madonna could have done a better job at lip-syncing.” Others noted, “Madonna is lip-syncing and Sabrina is singing over the backing track,” while acknowledging Coachella’s parade-like atmosphere.

Fans Push Back Against Ageism

Supporters condemned the backlash as ‘ageist and misogynistic.’ One fan on X declared, “Madonna is doing great.. only ageist, misogynist, insecure people who have issues with women of a certain age, still doing what they want in life, are bothered… if you don’t like her, just look away, don’t stream her songs, don’t buy her concert tickets. She is doing ok without you.”

Another praised, “Madonna is an icon a legend a superstar she looks amazing her performance is amazing she can keep up with a 25-year-old performer.” Fans emphasized her sold-out shows and enduring appeal: “Legends are legends until they die. No Madonna fans think she should retire lol. I can only hope to look that good at 67.”

Other Celebrity Highlights

Carpenter’s second-weekend set featured additional stars. Terry Crews reprised his White Chicks role with a cover of Vanessa Carlton’s ‘A Thousand Miles.’ Geena Davis delivered a monologue echoing Susan Sarandon’s from the prior weekend.
