Zoe Marshall Exposes ‘Performance Era’ as NRL WAG Queen

Published on

Zoe Marshall, wife of Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall, openly reflects on her past as one of rugby league’s most prominent partners during his peak NRL years. In a candid Instagram post, she shares a 2011 photo from the Dally M Awards, where Benji earned five-eighth of the year honors, and reveals she was merely ‘performing a character’ rather than living authentically.

Behind the Glamorous Facade

Marshall describes this period as her ‘TV/hosting/radio era’ and ‘performance era.’ She excelled at it, mastering the on-demand smile, perfectly curated outfits, steady on-camera voice, and a persona that blended seamlessly into any setting.

‘She’s still in me. But this version of me was trying so hard to figure it out. Who I was? What I valued?’ Marshall wrote. ‘So far from what I am now. I was good at it, really good… But here’s what nobody saw. I was performing, and they were applauding. And somehow that made it harder to stop. When everyone loves the character, it takes real courage to admit you’ve been playing one. That was the hardest part of this era… not the work, the pretending.’

Family Life and Intimacy Challenges

The couple married in 2013 and shares two children: son Benjamin and daughter Ever. In 2023, they renewed their vows at home in Sydney, surrounded by loved ones.

They often sleep in separate beds due to Benji’s sleep apnea, which causes heavy snoring. Marshall explained, ‘I can sometimes hear it through the wall, and sometimes he’s so loud, I have to actually get up out of bed and, instead of just nudging him, go and give him a good shake. But I think it keeps intimacy alive as well because you have to make the effort.’

Benji Marshall’s Stellar Career

Benji Marshall debuted in the NRL as a teenager in 2003 and secured a premiership with the Wests Tigers in 2005. Known for his flamboyant playstyle that transformed the game, he retired nearly two decades later as a superstar.

Transitioning to coaching, he took over from Tim Sheens at the Tigers in 2024. The team shows strong promise this season, holding third place on the NRL ladder and eyeing finals for the first time since 2011.
