Essendon Forward Isaac Kako Sidelined Medium-Term with Back Injury

Published on

Essendon faces another injury challenge as rising forward Isaac Kako sits out with a stress injury in his back. The 20-year-old scored a skillful goal on Anzac Day but saw limited action, finishing with 10 touches.

Recent Form and Career Progress

Kako has netted seven goals in six games this season, displaying strong growth in his 29th match for the Bombers during his second year at the club.

Diagnosis and Recovery Outlook

Scans on Monday morning detected the issue. Essendon football manager Dan MacPherson described it as a major disappointment.

“It’s a really disappointing setback for Isaac, who’d been playing some exciting footy for us in the early stages of this season,” MacPherson stated. “He’ll need to enter a period of rest now to let the injury settle, before building back up towards a return to play later in the season.”

The club labels the layoff medium-term, likely six to eight weeks, without committing to an exact duration.

Context Within the Squad

Sullivan Robey, who debuted in his third game on Saturday, overcame a pre-season back hotspot. Kako, a Next Generation Academy graduate picked 13th in the 2024 national draft, joined an inexperienced forward group featuring Robey, Nate Caddy, Archer Day-Wicks, and Archer May.
