UK households face a scorching start to the weekend with temperatures climbing to 25C today, Friday, May 1. Forecasts indicate Saturday will hover around 23C in London, feeling even warmer due to reduced cloud cover—up to 2C hotter than Friday.
Weather Outlook Through Sunday
The hot, summer-like conditions persist across much of England and the UK until Sunday, when cooler air arrives. Residents are advised to close windows, curtains, and blinds during peak heat to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.
Why Keep Homes Sealed During the Day
Well-insulated UK homes, designed for cold winters, trap heat effectively, making it challenging to stay cool. NHS guidelines recommend keeping rooms for babies and young children between 16C and 20C. When outdoor temperatures exceed this, strategic measures become essential to prevent indoor overheating.
Proven Tips to Beat the Heatwave
Energy experts recommend keeping windows shut—especially south-facing ones—while the sun shines directly on them. Draw curtains or blinds to block heat, and open windows on shaded sides for ventilation. Fully open all windows in the evening when cooler night air flows in.
OVO Energy advises: “Tempting as it is to fling open the windows at the first sign of summer, it’s not actually the best idea. To keep your house cool, you need to keep the hot air out. This means keeping windows closed during the day—particularly south-facing windows. Keep curtains, blinds and windows shut when the sun is shining directly on them, and when you’re out. Try opening windows on the most shaded side of your home, to avoid sunlight and hot air getting in.”
Debunking Common Cooling Myths
Heating professionals at BOXT warn that popular tactics like opening all windows or relying solely on fans can backfire. Adam Knight, Lead Engineer at BOXT, states: “Getting rid of unwanted heat in your home can be difficult in the summer months, especially when most UK properties are built to retain heat. While grabbing a fan or opening up all your windows are often mentioned as effective ways to cool your home, these methods may not result in the desired results.”
He adds: “When temperatures are particularly warm, opening up all your windows will let more hot air into your home, heating up your home and making you feel warmer. Instead of opening all your windows, it is much better to strategically open windows to create cross breezes throughout the day and open your windows during the night to let cooler air in.”
