Sheffield Wednesday Takeover Done: No Points Deduction for League One

Published on

Sheffield Wednesday has finalized its takeover by U.S. consortium Arise Capital Partners, ending a turbulent era under previous owner Dejphon Chansiri. The English Football League (EFL) has waived a threatened 15-point deduction, allowing the club to start next season on zero points in League One.

Takeover Announcement

The club revealed the completion of the deal on the pitch at Hillsborough before its final Championship match against West Brom. David Storch, leading the consortium alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin, received a warm welcome from fans.

Joint administrators confirmed the sale in a statement: “The transaction has been completed following constructive engagement with key stakeholders, including the EFL, and in accordance with all relevant regulatory requirements.”

EFL Waives Penalty

The EFL Board exercised discretion under its Insolvency Policy and decided against imposing the 15-point deduction upon the club’s exit from administration. An agreement also sets wage and transfer parameters to support future stability.

This relief follows earlier threats of starting League One at the bottom due to the bid’s creditor repayment falling short. Fans welcome the news after enduring 12 points deducted in October and six more later for unpaid obligations to players, staff, and transfers.

Club’s Recent Struggles

Relegated in February—the earliest in English football history—Sheffield Wednesday won just one league game this season. Danny Röhl departed before the campaign, leaving Henrik Pedersen to manage a depleted squad. Pedersen will lead the team in League One without the penalty.

Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri, who acquired the club in 2020, faces a three-year ban from EFL ownership or directorship roles due to financial issues.

Path to Completion

A prior consortium led by James Bord withdrew in February after being the preferred bidder. Arise Capital Partners stepped in, meeting a Friday deadline to avoid delays from the upcoming Independent Football Regulator (IFR), which assumes owner vetting from next Tuesday.

The administrators’ statement added: “The sale secures the long-term future of the club and marks the beginning of a new era for Sheffield Wednesday—one built on stability, responsibility, and renewed belief.”

IFR Response

IFR chair David Kogan stated: “This deal is good news for Sheffield Wednesday FC, the community, and the fans who have endured such a long period of uncertainty. Sheffield Wednesday’s experience is a timely reminder of why the IFR was established. From next week, new owners, directors, and senior executives in the top five divisions will be assessed by the IFR to ensure only fit and proper persons operate football clubs.”
