Casper Ruud secured his first ATP Masters 1000 title by defeating Jack Draper 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in the 2025 Madrid Open final. The 14th seed overcame a strong challenge from the British player to claim the career’s most prestigious honor.
Ruud’s Post-Match Apology and Praise
During a post-match interview, Ruud expressed regret to UK viewers and pundits, stating: “Sorry to spoil the British party here tonight, but it was, first of all, an incredible match.”
He highlighted Draper’s dominance in Madrid, adding: “Jack has been kind of wiping everyone on the floor here in Madrid. I knew if I didn’t bring my A+ game tonight, it will be really tough. Luckily, I think I did play really well throughout the whole match.”
Ruud, 27, further praised his opponent: “Jack has become a threat on any surface. If you look at his career before Madrid, his bigger results had been hard-court or grass. But now he’s played so well here in Madrid and shown that he can be a threat and understand the surface. Not like he was a bad clay court player before but he’s really taken a big step.”
Key Moments in the Final
Draper started strongly, breaking Ruud’s serve early to lead in the first set. He extended the advantage to 5-3, but Ruud mounted a comeback to steal the set.
After an emotional moment in his chair, Draper fought back to win the second set 6-3, forcing a decider. In the third, Ruud, a three-time Grand Slam finalist, broke at 3-2 and held serve to seal the victory.
Draper’s Response
Jack Draper reflected on the loss: “This sport is brutal but I will keep trying. I think this loss will make me better.”
He noted: “I thought there was a lot of good stuff but in a couple of key moments, I felt like his level maintained and mine maybe just dipped off a little bit. Not quite getting over the line helps fuel my fire a bit more that I need to keep on pushing, I need to keep on improving.”
Draper, who captured the Indian Wells title in 2024, withdrew from the 2026 Madrid Open ahead of its final on Sunday.
