Friends’ £880 Scratchcard Challenge Ends in Total Loss

Published on

A group of friends invested £880 in National Lottery Scratchcards over several months, hoping for a big payout, but ended up with nothing to show for it.

The Year-Long Scratchcard Experiment

Megan Smith Evans and her friends opted for a unique twist on lottery syndicates. Instead of traditional tickets, they bought £5 Scratchcards every Friday from April to November. Each participant purchased one card weekly, accumulating 176 cards in total before scratching them all together for a dramatic reveal.

They stored the cards throughout the year, building anticipation. Megan expressed optimism, believing their consistent effort would yield at least a break-even result despite the hefty £880 outlay.

The Disappointing Reveal

The group spent about an hour scratching every card, triple-checking results with a second verifier and even preparing a syndicate contract for potential big wins. Their hopes shattered as they failed to recover their investment.

Megan shared the outcome in a video, stating: “We had a second person checking them, we had a syndicate contract in case we won big and we didn’t even win our money back. I think we lost about £50 each, and it was just gutting.”

She added: “We were all so hopeful and we didn’t win it, and, actually, it’s put me off Scratchcards for life. I used to love Scratchcards – including online ones. I used to be obsessed actually.”

Megan noted the allure of online versions feels like “fake money” and easy to overspend on, while physical cards offered fun but ultimately led to regret after heavy spending.

Public Reactions

The video garnered significant views, sparking comments from viewers. One shared: “Oh no! We have only done them on an occasion, and not that much, but we don’t do them often anymore.”

Another remarked: “The suspense of waiting that long to scratch them must have been horrendous. Gutted you didn’t win your money back on them.” A third echoed: “I’m still not over it.”

Scratchcard Odds and Rules

Players face odds of about one in four on £5 Scratchcards, including breakeven wins of £5. Specific odds vary by game and appear on the card’s back.

National Lottery rules limit purchases to 10 Scratchcards per transaction at retail outlets.
