Middle East Conflict Drives 5.2% Rise in Aussie Living Costs

Published on

New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals annual living cost increases of 2.6% to 5.2% for all Australian household types in the year to March. Households dependent on government payments face the steepest rises, exceeding 4.8%.

Broad Cost Pressures from Regional Conflict

Cost-of-living pressures affect every household across Australia, fueled in part by the ongoing Middle East conflict. The latest Living Cost Indexes highlight housing, health, and transport as primary drivers.

Government Payment Households See Record Quarterly Jump

Sue-Ellen Luke, head of prices statistics at the ABS, notes that households with government payments as their main income source recorded the largest quarterly increases. This marks the biggest rise for pension-reliant households since the series began in 2007 and for age pensioners since September 2000.

Main Contributors to Rising Costs

All household types report at least 3.5% higher housing costs, driven by elevated electricity prices after rebates from the Commonwealth Energy Bill Relief Fund expired. Medical and hospital services increased across the board, while pharmaceutical costs rose for most households due to annual resets of Medicare Safety Net and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme thresholds on January 1.

Fuel Prices Surge from Middle East Tensions

Transport costs climbed sharply due to automotive fuel price hikes. Sue-Ellen Luke explains, “Automotive fuel prices increased mainly due to a large increase in March, reflecting the impact of the conflict in the Middle East on fuel prices.”

Fuel prices jumped 32.8% in March alone, leading to a 5% quarterly rise across household types despite earlier dips. Household fuel purchases dropped 1.3% last month amid the spike, which peaked at month’s end.

Tom Lay, ABS head of business statistics, states, “Household spending rose strongly in March, driven by a 5.1% rise in transport costs as fuel prices climbed in response to the conflict in the Middle East.”

RBA Assesses Limited Overall Impact

The Reserve Bank of Australia indicates the financial hit from higher fuel remains modest. Its latest Statement on Monetary Policy notes, “The additional spending on fuel since the start of the conflict amounts to less than 1% of total household income over that period, although for some households it will be a higher share.”

A government fuel excise cut in April eases some pressure, falling outside the latest indexes’ period.

Mortgage Holders Brace for More Strain

The RBA raised interest rates to 4.35% this week, reversing last year’s cuts and matching February 2025 levels. Governor Michele Bullock warns of tough times ahead, stating, “We’ve had this shock, which has lowered our real incomes, so yes, we are all feeling poorer. That’s what this has done, this war on the other side of the world.”

Economists anticipate further hikes. Ben Phillips, economic researcher at Australian National University, indicated in February that repeated increases would elevate living costs for employee households.
