Props Vanish from Harry Potter TV Set, Prompting Security Measures

Thieves have targeted the set of the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, prompting production teams to microchip broomsticks, wands, and other magical props. Several items, including pumpkins, spell books, wands, and fake food, disappeared from Hogwarts’ Great Hall during filming of the Halloween feast scene.

To combat further losses, crews installed tracking microchips in props and posted warnings across Warner Bros. Studios. One notice, styled like a classic Hogwarts announcement with a drawing of a tagged broomstick, reads: ‘Props on this production have been microchipped.’ It adds: ‘For inventory and security purposes props are being tracked daily and movement of props will be logged. If you need to take any prop off-set or away from its designated area, please seek approval from the Props Department first. If you notice any lost/misplaced items or anything out of place, please report it to the Props team so they can continue looking.’

Production leaders express frustration over the incidents and warn that violators face contract breaches and removal from the set. Officials plan to monitor online marketplaces like eBay for stolen items, with severe consequences for those caught.

New Cast and Production Details

The HBO and Warner Bros. collaboration reimagines J.K. Rowling’s books, featuring Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton, 12, as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout, 11, as Ron Weasley. Announced in 2024, the series films at Warner Bros. Studio in Leavesden.

Earlier disruptions included Apple Maps revealing top-secret sets in March, showcasing Hagrid’s hut, Gringotts Wizarding Bank in Diagon Alley, and Privet Drive. Staff used codewords and ‘Dark Train’ lanyards to maintain secrecy. The Hogwarts Express setup, including Hogsmeade Station, has also appeared in images.

HBO confirms a Christmas premiere, exciting fans.

Ongoing Franchise Controversies

The Harry Potter series faces scrutiny over J.K. Rowling’s public stances on transgender issues, which she has expressed since 2019. She argues against certain trans rights claims, including preferences on pronouns and women’s spaces.

Original stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, along with Eddie Redmayne and Stephen Fry, have publicly distanced themselves from her views. New cast members echo support for trans rights.

Paapa Essiedu, portraying Severus Snape, signed an open letter challenging a Supreme Court ruling on ‘woman’ and biological sex—a decision Rowling endorsed. Essiedu stands firm, stating artists in the trans community deserve dignity.

John Lithgow, cast as Albus Dumbledore, addressed fan backlash after his role announcement. A friend with a trans child shared an open letter urging him to quit. Lithgow called the choice difficult but proceeded, noting future interviews will revisit the topic.

In a Variety interview, Lithgow said: ‘I take the subject extremely seriously. J.K. Rowling has created this amazing canon for young people… It’s so much about acceptance. It’s about good versus evil. It’s about kindness versus cruelty… I find it ironic and somewhat inexplicable that Rowling has expressed such views.’ He emphasized the story opposes intolerance and bigotry, has not met Rowling, and praised the production team as ‘remarkable’ despite her limited involvement.
