The Sheep Detectives (PG, 109 mins)

Verdict: Fun family flick with woolly twists

Rating: ★★★

A High Bar from Sheep Comedies

The 2015 hit Shaun the Sheep and its 2019 follow-up Farmageddon established a lofty standard in family-friendly sheep animations. The Sheep Detectives delivers occasional brilliance amid its barnyard antics, offering moments of pure delight for audiences.

Stellar Cast and Creative Team

Hugh Jackman headlines the live-action performers alongside Emma Thompson, while the voice cast features Bryan Cranston, Patrick Stewart, Chris O’Dowd, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Director Kyle Balda, known for Minions, teams with writer Craig Mazin—credits include Chernobyl and The Hangover Part II. Producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner bring their track record of blockbusters from Working Title.

Adapted from Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel Three Bags Full, the film echoes the twisty intrigue of the Knives Out series, complete with quirky suspects and a labyrinthine plot—plus animated talking sheep.

Plot: A Shepherd’s Demise and Sheep Sleuths

Jackman portrays George Hardy, a dedicated shepherd who names his flock—like the feisty twins Ronnie and Reggie—doses them with blue medicine, and shares detective novels at dusk. Unbeknownst to him, the sheep converse, drawing from those tales.

Tragedy strikes when George meets a fatal end. His intelligent herd steps up: world’s smartest sheep Lily (voiced by Louis-Dreyfus), alongside Mopple (O’Dowd) and Sebastian (Cranston). The rural English backdrop evokes Agatha Christie and Midsomer Murders.

Human characters include a bumbling local officer (Nicholas Braun, channeling his Succession dimwit), a persistent reporter (Nicholas Galitzine), a cunning shopkeeper (Hong Chau), and George’s biting lawyer (Thompson), who discloses his adopted children during the will reading.

Strengths and Shortfalls

The CGI sheep look impeccable, and the story races forward with witty lines. The flock astutely notes police tendencies to blame ‘drifters’ on such crimes, nodding to classic mysteries.

Yet the film falls short of its predecessors’ consistent charm, leaving viewers satisfied but not fully immersed in the fleece-filled fun.
