Dawson City: Yukon River Nears 1998 Peak

A large ice jam, stretching eight kilometers downstream from Dawson City, drives the Yukon River’s surge. Officials report water levels now approach the 1998 peak, the second-highest since 1979. Flooding occurs at the Moosehide site, while high waters affect Dawson City.

The jam grew overnight, and additional ice flow could intensify the rise. Authorities note the unpredictable nature of breakup conditions. A sudden jam release might cause a brief surge, but assets on the river side of the dike face immediate risk regardless.

This advisory coincides with a flood warning for the nearby Klondike River at Henderson’s Corner, where some residents remain under evacuation alert.

Carmacks: Nordenskiold River Levels Stabilize

Warm weather and melting snow spurred a sharp rise on the Nordenskiold River over 48 hours, prompting Wednesday’s flood watch. River flow peaked overnight but dipped slightly by Thursday.

Cooler conditions, including sub-zero overnight temperatures, should moderate the rise in coming days.
