Celebrity chef James Martin maintains his slim figure and boosts his wellbeing through a simple daily routine after losing three stone. The 53-year-old, who shed weight from 17 stone to 14 stone following his 2005 appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, has transformed his diet and fitness habits to stay in shape.
From Unhealthy Habits to Balanced Diet
Previously, Martin admitted to frequent snacking on the road, including Mars bars, pizzas, and takeaways. He initially cut out chocolate but reintroduced it in moderation. Today, his meals feature about 80 percent fish, with butter as a staple ingredient.
Simple Exercise: Walking the Dogs
Martin skips the gym despite having one at home. Instead, he walks 20,000 to 30,000 steps daily with his dogs. “I have a gym upstairs, but I haven’t used it though. I do about 20 to 30,000 steps a day walking my dogs,” he shared.
The NHS recommends a brisk 10- to 15-minute walk each day as part of 150 minutes of weekly activity. This accessible exercise builds stamina, burns calories, and supports heart health.
Motivation from Racing Cars
Running restaurants and bakeries across the country while filming TV shows, Martin dislikes traditional workouts. His drive comes from racing cars. On the Spooning with Mark Wogan podcast, he explained: “It comes down to the fact that I race cars… I actually struggle to get out of them now. Getting in them, you kind of fall in them, but then you’ve got to get out of them and it just doesn’t look very good.”
He added: “I don’t go to the gym; it comes down to the fact that I can get my a**e in and out of a car.”
Personal Life and TV Appearances
Martin feels uneasy about fans calling him a “sex symbol.” He is dating personal trainer Kim Johnson, 39, who referred to him as her “fiancé” online in January. This weekend, he welcomes TV presenter Guy Martin on his ITV Saturday Morning show.
