Super Bowl champion quarterback Craig Morton has passed away at the age of 83. The Denver Broncos announced his death on Monday, noting that Morton died on Saturday in California surrounded by family members.
College and Early NFL Career
Morton starred in football and baseball for the California Golden Bears during his Hall of Fame college career. Selected fifth overall in the 1965 NFL Draft, he began his professional journey with the Dallas Cowboys, contributing to their Super Bowl VI victory. He later played for the New York Giants before joining the Broncos.
Legacy with the Denver Broncos
Morton arrived with the Broncos in 1977 and remained for six seasons. He guided the team to its first playoff berth and a berth in Super Bowl XII. Upon departing in 1982, he held franchise records for passing yards at 11,895 and passing touchdowns at 74.
Honors and Tributes
Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1992, Morton also earned spots in the Broncos Ring of Fame and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. The New York Giants issued a statement: “We are saddened to hear of Craig’s passing. He was a great leader and teammate. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
Morton is survived by his wife Kym, his sister, children, and grandchildren.
