Dragons Face Furious Fans at Forum After 9-Game Winless Run

Published on

St George Illawarra Dragons supporters endure a grim season with nine games played, zero victories, a -185 points differential, and just two points on the board. The club hierarchy organizes a members-only forum to address fan frustrations directly.

Forum Details and Rapid Sign-Ups

Management emailed members last Friday at 1:04 p.m., inviting them to hear from CEO Tim Watsford, COO Ben Creagh, and head coach Dean Young. Demand surged, filling capacity within 39 minutes and prompting a follow-up notice.

Strict Rules: No Children or Recordings

The invitation specifies the event suits adults only, excluding children, with no online streaming available. Attendees cannot record the session. Watsford confirms these measures, calling it an “adult event” and emphasizing an in-house approach for exclusivity and transparency.

“We want to try and keep it very much in-house,” Watsford stated. “That’s the way we want to do it from an exclusivity perspective. I do like to speak transparently and openly and there is trust there.”

Expectations of Heated Exchanges

Watsford anticipates intense questions, particularly on recruitment. “Our fans are up and about and rightly so,” he said. “We might get a few curly ones, absolutely, but we wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t front up.”

He acknowledges the passionate fanbase’s right to demand answers amid prolonged poor results. “Our fan base is passionate and we haven’t had success for a while. That’s not a pass mark in anyone’s books,” Watsford added.

The CEO commits to driving club-wide changes. “We’re not where we need to be and we know that,” he noted, highlighting the focus on future direction during the forum.

Ongoing Struggles and Recent Changes

The winless run extends to 13 straight losses. Head coach Dean Young recently mandated eight-hour training days to reshape club culture, yet results falter. The Dragons conceded 106 points across their latest defeats to the Newcastle Knights and Sydney Roosters.
