UK’s Look Mum No Computer Targets Eurovision Win After 29 Years

Published on

The United Kingdom enters the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest with high hopes, selecting solo artist and YouTube sensation Look Mum No Computer to end a 29-year championship drought since Katrina and the Waves triumphed in 1997. The 70th edition unfolds in Vienna, Austria, featuring 35 countries amid ongoing tensions over Israel’s participation.

Who is Look Mum No Computer?

Real name Sam Battle, the 31-year-old Lincolnshire native first gained attention as frontman of indie rock band ZIBRA, which performed at Glastonbury in 2015 for BBC Introducing. He launched his YouTube channel in 2016, amassing over 1.4 million subscribers and 91 million views with videos showcasing self-built synthesizers and circuit-bent instruments.

Battle describes his pivot to DIY electronics: ‘I’m a musician and about two and a half years ago, I decided to try a different venture, and I started putting up videos with machines that I built… I just couldn’t help myself, but build silly machines.’

His career includes the 2019 single ‘Groundhog Day,’ tours across Germany, Switzerland, and the UK, and collaborations like the supergroup Uncompressed with Cuckoo and Hainbach, debuting at Barcelona’s Sónar festival. He co-produced tracks for the film A Street Cat Named Bob and Netflix’s Safe, blending ‘music, technology, and absurdity.’ Beyond music, Battle delivered a TEDx talk, released a video game, and earned a Guinness World Record for the largest drone synthesizer.

Selection and Bold Strategy

Announced in February 2026, Battle represents the UK. He expressed excitement: ‘I find it completely bonkers to be jumping on this wonderful and wild journey… I hope Eurovision is ready to get synthesised!’

BBC entertainment head Kalpna Patel-Knight praised the choice: ‘His bold vision, unique sound and electric performance style make him a truly unforgettable artist… I am sure he will make us all proud on the international stage in May.’

Eurovision host Graham Norton added: ‘I think LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER is a really great choice for the UK. If he connects with the crowd, there will be no stopping him.’

Battle acknowledges the gamble: ‘This is not going to be taken seriously because the BBC love the conventional stuff, and this is not conventional. So they’re taking a bit of a risk – but who knows?’

Song Details and Performance

Battle performs ‘Eins, Zwei, Drei’ in the second semi-final, co-written with Lasse Midtsian Nymann, Julie ‘Kill J’ Aagaard, and Thomas Stengaard. The track explores ‘escaping the soul-crushing boredom of the nine-to-five, into a world of dreams and endless possibilities,’ with a chorus partly in German—the first UK entry not exclusively in English in 68 years.

UK Eurovision History

The UK has competed 67 times since 1957, boasting a record 16 second-place finishes, most recently Sam Ryder’s ‘Spaceman’ in 2022. Last year, Remember Monday placed 19th out of 26 finalists with ‘What The Hell Just Happened?’

Reports indicate an unnamed act was recently dropped after routine checks uncovered unacceptable online comments, forcing a last-minute replacement amid high stakes.

Contest Controversies

The event faces boycotts from countries including Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia over Israel’s involvement amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. Belgium considered withdrawing but will compete, while Iceland pulled out. The European Broadcasting Union adopted stricter voting rules following manipulation allegations but allowed all participants.

Eurovision expert Dean Vuletic called it ‘a historic moment… one of the most serious crises that the organisation has ever faced,’ predicting the largest political boycott in the contest’s history.
