Iconic Footwear Brand Makes a Comeback on High Streets
The well-known British footwear and handbag retailer, Russell & Bromley, is once again gracing high streets just weeks after closing 33 of its stores. The brand has been acquired by major retail group Next, following a period of administration.
Rescue Deal Secures Brand’s Future
Next purchased the luxury brand for £2.5 million as part of a pre-pack administration agreement finalized in January. The acquisition also encompassed all intellectual property rights and an additional £1.3 million for existing stock. This pivotal deal was orchestrated to safeguard the enduring legacy of the Russell & Bromley name.
However, the transition involved a strategic consolidation of the company’s physical footprint. Following the agreement, only three prominent locations were retained: Chelsea, Mayfair, and the Bluewater shopping centre. Consequently, the other 33 retail outlets and nine shop-in-shop concessions ceased operations permanently. This restructuring also led to a significant number of job losses.
Staff with redundancy claims are currently being managed by Interpath, a global financial firm that is also overseeing the remaining business operations.
Excitement Builds as New Location Opens
Now, approximately one month after its final store closure, the shoe brand has made a notable return, reopening its doors in Richmond, South-west London. The news has been met with considerable enthusiasm from shoppers, who have taken to social media platforms to their delight. Comments such as “Excellent. Good news” and “Good news for Richmond” highlight the positive reception to the brand’s resurgence.
A Legacy Continues
Founded in 1879 by George Bromley and Elizabeth Russell, the company is currently led by Andrew Bromley. Reflecting on the sale, he stated, “Following a strategic review with external advisers, we have taken the difficult decision to sell the Russell & Bromley brand. This is the best route to secure the future for the brand, and we would like to thank our staff, suppliers, partners and customers for their support throughout our history.”
Next has affirmed its commitment to providing the necessary operational stability and expertise to guide the brand through its next phase. A spokesperson for Next commented, “This acquisition secures the future of a much-loved British footwear brand. Next intends to build on this legacy and provide the operational stability and expertise to support Russell & Bromley’s next chapter, allowing it to return to its core mission: the design and curation of world-class, premium footwear and accessories for many years to come.”
