Electoral Commission Expected to Investigate Labor MP Ali France
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is reportedly preparing to launch an investigation into federal Labor MP Ali France. The probe is expected to scrutinize the accuracy of her electoral enrolment, specifically concerning her listed residential address.
Questions Raised Over MP’s Address
Concerns have been raised by the Opposition Coalition regarding the federal Dickson MP’s enrolled address. It has come to light that the property listed as her residence was reportedly demolished in February to make way for a new home. This development has prompted scrutiny over whether France’s enrolment accurately reflects her current place of living.
Responding to inquiries, the MP stated that her house was demolished in February for the construction of a new residence better suited to her needs as a disabled woman. She indicated that the new home is anticipated to be completed by the end of the year, and she and her son are looking forward to returning.
France has rejected any suggestions of electoral rule breaches, asserting, “I have lived at the address for five years and will continue to live at the address.”
Electoral Act Requirements and Allegations
Under Section 101 of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918, Australian citizens are required to enrol at their current place of residence and ensure their details are kept up to date. Individuals who move and reside at a new address for over a month must notify the AEC within 21 days. Failure to update enrolment details within this timeframe is considered an offense, with penalties applicable regardless of intent.
Further questions have arisen from a social media post where France tagged a suburb within her electorate, despite filming a video several kilometers away. In a clip shared on January 31, France appeared to be at a secondary property in The Gap, which is located in the neighboring electorate of Ryan. However, the location was tagged as Arana Hills, a suburb within her own electorate situated 8km away.
In a separate post on February 8, France shared comments from constituents who praised her community presence. She captioned the post, “This is the first time I have ever run into my MP in the local area and I have lived here for 26 years.”
Formal Referral to Electoral Watchdog
Coalition Senator and Shadow Special Minister of State, James McGrath, has formally referred the matter to the AEC. Senator McGrath commented, “Under AEC guidelines and regulations this would suggest a clear breach of the Act and therefore should be investigated with the utmost seriousness and in a timely manner.” He added, “A Labor MP being enrolled at a vacant block of land is as dodgy as they come.”
Background of Ali France
Ali France gained national attention after defeating former Opposition Leader Peter Dutton in the 2025 election, becoming a prominent figure within the Labor party. A former journalist and para-athlete, her life was significantly altered in 2011 following a severe car accident that resulted in life-threatening injuries and the amputation of her leg. Her eldest son, Henry, passed away from leukemia last year after an 18-month period of care. Her former partner and the father of her children, Clive France, died from cancer in September 2023.
