NBA Finals Refs Under Fire for Victor Wembanyama Protection Claims

Accusations of preferential treatment for Spurs star Victor Wembanyama have surfaced during the NBA Finals, with many fans and analysts pointing to perceived lenient calls against the New York Knicks.

The controversy intensified during Game 2 on Friday night in San Antonio. In the second quarter, a play involving Knicks center Mitchell Robinson and Spurs sensation Victor Wembanyama drew significant attention. Following a perceived push-off from Wembanyama, Robinson appeared to grab his jersey, leading to a brief physical exchange. Although the play was whistled dead and Robinson’s arm made contact with Wembanyama’s back, a technical foul was assessed against Robinson. This decision sparked widespread debate, with many believing it was an unwarranted call.

Sports Pundits and Fans Voice Discontent

Long-time sports commentator Skip Bayless took to social media platform X to express his disbelief. “Obviously not a tech on Robinson. Wemby so overprotected by the league,” Bayless posted, reflecting a sentiment shared by a large portion of the fanbase. While a few individuals acknowledged the contact, suggesting Robinson’s hand made contact with Wembanyama’s face/neck area after the whistle, the prevailing opinion leaned towards an unfair call.

One fan argued that the situation warranted a “double tech,” implying that both players should have been penalized or neither. ESPN analyst and former NBA star Richard Jefferson also weighed in, analyzing the sequence. “This is normal basketball. Now, Wemby, he pushes him back. Now that could have been a technical on Wemby. And then he pushes him back. And then you’re like ‘Oh that’s a technical on Robinson’? You got to call this thing even right down the middle for both players,” Jefferson stated. Play-by-play announcer Mike Breen suggested that officials could have opted to let the players “play on.” A double technical would have resulted in no free throws for either team. Instead, Wembanyama was awarded a free throw, which he successfully converted, narrowing the Knicks’ lead.

Further Refereeing Questions Arise

The officiating in Game 2 faced further scrutiny later in the game. Another sequence in the first half saw Spurs player De’Aaron Fox appear to be fouled, but no whistle was blown. Fox then proceeded to pick up his dribble and restart it, a move that seemingly went unnoticed by the referees. This led to further fan frustration, with one user on X commenting, “Tony Brothers needs to retire. Ridiculous refereeing going on tonight.” Another fan humorously questioned the legality of the sequence, asking, “Who knew you could pickup your dribble, spin around and restart your dribble?”

In the second half, a more hands-off approach from the officiating crew was observed, a change that did not go unnoticed by commentators. “They are letting them play,” Breen remarked, a sentiment immediately echoed by Jefferson, who added, “As they should.”
