Golf Legend Shares Insights on Friendship with McIlroy
Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus has offered a glimpse into his current relationship with fellow golf star Rory McIlroy, highlighting a deep admiration and friendship that has developed over the years.
Nicklaus, who has provided significant guidance to McIlroy throughout his career, recalled a pivotal moment in 2025 when he advised the Northern Irishman just before McIlroy secured a career Grand Slam at Augusta National. This strategic counsel reportedly played a role in McIlroy’s historic green jacket victory.
The 37-year-old McIlroy has since gone on to defend his Masters title and is widely considered a strong contender for future major championships. Nicklaus’ consistent availability to offer advice underscores the mutual respect between the two athletes.
Nicklaus Praises McIlroy’s Power and Precision
Speaking during the broadcast of the second round at Muirfield Village, Nicklaus discussed his relationship with McIlroy. The 18-time major champion expressed his amazement at McIlroy’s ability to generate such distance despite his relatively smaller stature.
“The most impressive thing is he’s not a big guy and he hits it so darn far, that’s what’s impressive,” Nicklaus stated. He added that McIlroy’s game becomes exceptionally strong when he refrains from over-exerting his swings.
“When he throttles it back a little bit, then he becomes a really, really good player,” Nicklaus explained. “When he keeps hitting it too hard, then Rory gets himself in trouble. I love Rory. He’s a wonderful guy and a great player.”
Nicklaus concluded by emphasizing the personal connection that has formed. “We’ve become very close friends and I like to see him play well. But I think it takes time for us all to learn.”
McIlroy’s Driver Adjustments for Accuracy
The conversation also touched upon recent adjustments made by McIlroy to his equipment. Prior to The Memorial Tournament, McIlroy reportedly opted for a heavier shaft in his driver, a move aimed at enhancing accuracy.
According to reports, McIlroy switched from a 65-gram shaft to a 75-gram shaft. This adjustment is intended to reduce the variability of his shots, even if it means a slight decrease in swing speed and distance.
The Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis noted, “Rory McIlroy, by the way, is making a slightly significant change in his driver… He’s using a 75-gram shaft in his driver this week. Why? Well, he feels, even though he’s going to give up some speed with a heavier shaft, his misses won’t be as wide.”
While this change reflects a proactive approach to improving his game, McIlroy’s fairway hit percentage at Muirfield Village this week stands at 57.14%, indicating that refining accuracy remains an ongoing focus.
