McLaren Racing’s Legacy Celebrated Ahead of Monaco Grand Prix Milestone

Amanda McLaren, daughter of the legendary Formula 1 founder Bruce McLaren, has shared a heartfelt message for the current McLaren Racing team, including drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Her remarks come as the team prepares to mark its 1,000th Grand Prix at the iconic Monaco Grand Prix, the very venue where the team made its debut in 1966.

Bruce McLaren established his racing team in the 1960s. The team secured its first victory two years after its inception in Belgium. Tragically, Bruce McLaren passed away in a testing accident in 1970. However, his enduring legacy continues through the racing team that bears his name, boasting a remarkable record of 13 drivers’ titles and 10 constructors’ championships.

A Message of Pride and Gratitude

Reflecting on the team’s resurgence and its significant milestone, Amanda McLaren conveyed her pride and gratitude to the individuals who keep her father’s vision alive. She shared her personal tradition of emailing the team when victories were achieved, stating, “When we started winning again, I’d send the team an email and say, ‘Dad would be so proud’.”

Team Principal Andrea Stella has often responded with deep emotion, with Amanda recalling, “Andrea would often come back and say, ‘It gives me goosebumps to hear you talk about your father’.” She emphasized her consistent appreciation for their efforts: “Every time I see them, I thank them for what they’ve done, for continuing my father’s legacy and getting the team back at the front where we should be.”

Praise for Drivers and Recognition for the Entire Team

Directly addressing the drivers, Amanda McLaren offered high praise: “To Lando and Oscar: you’re just both lovely young men, you’re great drivers. Lando, you’ve got a championship. Oscar, you will definitely have one in the future. Keep driving those cars as fast as you possibly can. But stay lovely young men.”

She underscored the collective nature of success in Formula 1: “But it is a team sport – everybody at McLaren Technology Centre and beyond is a crucial part of what happens to get the car on the grid to race on a Sunday afternoon.” Her message concluded with a broad thank you: “And so to everybody at McLaren Technology Centre and beyond, thank you for all that you do with my father’s name attached to it.”

Enduring Legacy and Brand Identity

In an era where many motorsport entities have undergone significant identity shifts under new ownership, the McLaren name has remained a constant. Despite the McLaren family no longer holding a financial stake since the 1970s, the preservation of the brand’s name has been a significant source of pride for Amanda.

“The fact that we still exist, and the name has remained the same over the years, I know my father would be incredibly proud of that, and so I am as well,” she stated. She also ed warmth for the team’s global fanbase, referred to as the “papaya army.”

Amanda acknowledged past partnerships, noting the period as McLaren-Mercedes, and ed gratitude that the “McLaren part was always stuck,” highlighting the enduring strength of the original name.
