Devlin Finds Focus on World Stage After Painful Club Season Finale

Cameron Devlin, a tenacious midfielder known for his positive outlook, is cherishing his second World Cup appearance with the Socceroos. While representing Australia is always an honor, this tournament offers a particular balm for Devlin, helping him process the painful conclusion to his club season in Scotland.

The midfielder is still grappling with the events of the final day of the Scottish Premiership season, where Heart of Midlothian’s ambitious pursuit of ending a 40-year Old Firm dominance culminated in disappointment and unrest. The intensity of preparing for a World Cup in the United States is providing a crucial distraction from the emotional aftermath of Hearts’ 3-1 defeat to Celtic, which was marred by an ugly pitch invasion. This incident forced Devlin and his teammates to quickly retreat to their team bus, still in their playing kits.

Reflecting on a ‘Horrible’ End to the Season

“It was horrible, to be honest,” Devlin stated, reflecting on the scenes that unfolded. “The scenes you all would have seen, that’s not what football is about. Obviously, they won the game and they were the champions. But just the way it all happened, the last week with some of the decisions and stuff, it puts a bit of a sour taste on the ending to what was such a good season for such a special club.”

He continued, “The end goal that we all wanted didn’t happen, which was so unfortunate. It’s just frustrating the way it finished, you know, just with all the fans running on the field. None of the players got hurt, but it wasn’t nice.”

Devlin acknowledged the lingering impact of the outcome: “At the end of the day, we didn’t quite get it over the line, which is something that will take a while [to process]. I’m quite fortunate I get to come in here… a World Cup’s a good thing to [help] forget about things back at club.”

A Crucial Juncture for Devlin’s Career

This World Cup could also mark a significant turning point in Devlin’s club career. Currently off contract with Hearts, he faces a crucial decision regarding his future—whether to commit to the Edinburgh club, where he has spent the last five years, or seek new challenges elsewhere. Beyond the welcome distraction from his club-related anguish, the tournament presents an invaluable platform. However, Devlin insists his sole focus is on impressing Socceroos coach Tony Popovic.

“I know I’ve got a massive decision to make,” Devlin admitted, having recently celebrated his 28th birthday while in camp. “[But] you don’t really want any distractions. You just want to focus on this, do as well as I can for my country. This is the pinnacle for any sportsman, so to be focusing on someone else at the moment is probably not the right thing to do.”

Securing a World Cup Spot

Devlin’s presence in the squad was not a certainty just weeks ago. Despite being named for the previous World Cup, he remained an unused substitute. His first minutes under Popovic came in Australia’s recent 1-1 warm-up draw against Switzerland. A potential opportunity arose when midfielder Patrick Yazbek suffered a quadriceps injury in early May, seemingly opening a path for Devlin in Popovic’s plans.

Having experienced the last World Cup from the sidelines, Devlin is eager to contribute on the field this time around. “I had 10 minutes to do as best I could to put my best foot forward,” he recalled. “My dad reminded me after, it was more or less two years since I’d played for the Socceroos, which I didn’t know because I’ve been here a lot; I just haven’t played. Whatever role I’m given to be in this squad is always so special and something I don’t take for granted. I just want to play more, and hopefully I can do that.”

Potential Squad Changes Amidst Injury Concerns

Injury concerns could still lead to further adjustments within the squad. Kai Trewin was observed departing the Socceroos’ team hotel on Sunday afternoon, accompanied by Andrew McKenzie, Football Australia’s general manager of high performance, and team doctor Mark Jones. Inquiries have been made to the Socceroos regarding whether Trewin was undergoing scans.

Trewin, who played 81 minutes in the draw with Switzerland, featuring at right wing-back and then in midfield, is a versatile player valued for his adaptability. Should an injury necessitate a change, the team has until 24 hours before their opening match to finalize their squad. The Socceroos are set to commence their World Cup campaign against Turkey on Sunday (AEST) in Vancouver.
