Anthony Martial’s Contract Terminated Early by Mexican Club

Anthony Martial’s recent football chapter has reportedly concluded prematurely, with his contract at Mexican club Monterrey set to be terminated a year ahead of schedule. The agreement to end the Frenchman’s deal early comes after a challenging tenure with the club.

Early Departure from Monterrey

Martial, 30, only joined Monterrey in September of the previous year, with his contract extending until 2027, including an option for an additional year. However, his time with the club has been cut short after accumulating just one goal and three assists across 20 appearances.

This development marks another setback for the former Manchester United striker, who also experienced a less than stellar period at AEK Athens between 2024 and 2025. His stint with Monterrey was notably impacted by a dislocated shoulder in February, an injury that led to him being stretchered off during a match against Club Leon.

Martial’s final outing for the Central American giants occurred on March 18 in the CONCACAF Champions Cup against Cruz Azul.

Reported Training Exile

Further reports indicate that later in March, Martial was allegedly excluded from training sessions following an incident where he reacted negatively to not being substituted into a match against Chivas de Guadalajara. According to Mexican outlet TUDN, Martial displayed frustration on the bench when a young player was introduced in the 74th minute, with his team trailing significantly.

The striker, reportedly angered by the decision of manager Nicolas Sanchez, remained an unused substitute for the remainder of the game. This alleged outburst was reportedly observed by club staff, leading to Martial being instructed to train separately from the main squad for the rest of that week.

Career Trajectory

Upon his arrival at Old Trafford in 2015 for a then-record fee for a teenager, Martial was widely expected to develop into a world-class attacking talent, especially after scoring on his debut against Liverpool. However, his time at Manchester United was characterized by inconsistency, injury concerns, and frequent managerial changes, ultimately resulting in an average of just over 10 goals per season across all competitions.

After falling down the pecking order in 2022, Martial was loaned to Sevilla, where he struggled for form, scoring only once in 12 games. He then completed a free transfer to AEK Athens in 2024. With the Greek club, he scored nine goals in 24 appearances, despite reportedly being on the club’s most substantial contract. He was subsequently left out of their Champions League squad before his departure due to wage demands that were considered unworkable.
