Pop superstar Taylor Swift was a prominent presence at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, taking in game four of the NBA Finals as the New York Knicks faced off against the San Antonio Spurs. The 14-time Grammy winner added to the event’s considerable celebrity wattage, sporting a blue and orange Knicks t-shirt emblazoned with “Stevie Knicks.” She joined a host of familiar faces in the stands, including acclaimed film director Spike Lee and actor Ben Stiller, both known for their long-standing support of the Knicks.
A Star-Studded Spectacle
Swift’s appearance comes on the heels of a surprise performance in Los Angeles the previous day at the world premiere of “Toy Story 5,” a project for which she contributed an original song. Her presence at the iconic arena also fuels speculation, with rumors suggesting it could be the venue for her upcoming wedding to NFL player Travis Kelce next month.
The Knicks’ pursuit of their first NBA championship since 1973, a quest against a dynamic young Spurs squad led by the prodigious French talent Victor Wembanyama, has ignited a fervent passion throughout New York City and captivated sports enthusiasts nationwide. Initial victories for the Knicks in the first two games, held in San Antonio, had amplified the excitement among their fanbase.
Record-Breaking Viewership
The Spurs managed to secure a victory on Monday at Madison Square Garden, a game that also saw a notable attendance by U.S. President Donald Trump. His presence was met with audible disapproval from some sections of the crowd, attending as a guest of Knicks owner James Dolan. Data released following the game indicates that this contest was the most-watched NBA Finals game three since 1998, the year of Michael Jordan’s final Finals appearance. According to figures from Nielsen media research, the game attracted an average of 23.8 million viewers, peaking at 26.3 million viewers in the closing moments of the fourth quarter. This audience figure marks the largest television viewership since Super Bowl 60 on February 8.
Swift’s connection to the Knicks is not a recent development. A native of neighboring Pennsylvania, she has been a regular attendee at Knicks games since relocating to New York in 2014. Just three weeks prior, she and Travis Kelce were observed at a Knicks playoff game against the Cavaliers in Cleveland, a matchup that resulted in a win for the Knicks, much to the chagrin of Kelce, who hails from Ohio.
