Haiti’s national football team has been compelled to make last-minute adjustments to their World Cup kits, just days before the tournament’s commencement. FIFA has ruled that the original designs were too politically charged, necessitating a swift revision.
Controversial Kit Imagery
The initial jerseys featured a depiction of soldiers raising the Haitian flag, commemorating the nation’s independence from France following the Battle of Vertières in 1803. However, FIFA’s regulations strictly prohibit any ‘political, religious, or personal messages or slogans’ on team apparel.
This ruling means Haiti must present a new jersey design before their opening match against Scotland. While Haitian officials reportedly viewed FIFA’s interpretation as a “misunderstanding,” they have complied with the mandate and will be receiving new strips from Colombian manufacturer Saeta.
Manufacturer’s Statement
Saeta, the kit manufacturer, stated that their original design was intended as a “tribute to the men and women who contribute every day to Haiti’s future” and was not meant as a political statement. The company acknowledged that FIFA determined certain visual elements could be interpreted differently under equipment regulations and requested modifications.
“While this interpretation differed from our intention, Saeta respected the process and implemented the final requirements communicated by FIFA,” a Saeta representative explained.
Official Response
A spokesperson for the Haitian football federation commented that FIFA officials requested the removal of the image depicting Vertières and independence heroes raising the Haitian flag due to a “misinterpretation.” They clarified that Vertières is the site of the final battle that secured Haiti’s independence on November 18, 1803, noting the irony that the team qualified for the World Cup on November 18, 2025.
The federation has not issued further statements, having instructed Saeta to proceed with the necessary changes.
FIFA’s Role and Haiti’s World Cup Campaign
The rules governing football kits are established by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and administered by FIFA. Haiti had planned to utilize three distinct kits for the tournament: a blue home jersey, a white away strip, and a red third kit.
Their World Cup journey begins with a match against Scotland at 2 AM on Sunday, followed by fixtures against Brazil and Morocco. This marks Haiti’s second appearance at the World Cup, their previous outing in 1974 being unsuccessful. However, they secured their qualification for the current tournament by finishing atop a competitive group that included Honduras, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua.
In their pre-tournament friendlies, Haiti demonstrated strong form, notably defeating New Zealand 4-0, a result more decisive than England’s 1-0 victory over the same opponent. They later lost to Peru with a score of 2-1.
