June 15th marks a significant milestone for Working Animals International as it celebrates the tenth anniversary of International Working Animal Day. This annual campaign is dedicated to raising awareness about the indispensable roles played by working donkeys, horses, mules, camels, oxen, and numerous other animals across the globe.
Public Perception of Animal Value Revealed
To commemorate this decade of advocacy, a survey of 2,000 adults was commissioned by the organization. The findings highlight a surprising perception of undervalued animals, with bees, donkeys, and mules topping the list. Other creatures frequently cited as underappreciated include frogs, foxes, and rats.
More than half of those surveyed (54%) believe the contributions of working animals are often overlooked. A significant portion of respondents suggested this lack of recognition stems from these animals not being perceived as ‘cute.’ Furthermore, 42% attributed the disregard to a failure to appreciate their vital functions for both the planet and humanity. A majority (51%) feel that increased public awareness about the work these animals perform would significantly alter this perception.
Even some commonly recognized farm animals, such as pigs, chickens, and goats, were identified within the top 12 most underappreciated creatures, indicating a broad disconnect in public awareness.
A Visual Call for Recognition
As part of the anniversary, a visual puzzle has been released, featuring 10 working animals in scenes depicting their contemporary roles. This initiative aims to visually demonstrate the diverse and essential jobs these animals undertake.
Linda Edwards, chief executive of Working Animals International, explained the rationale behind the puzzle: “We wanted to bring to life just how much work working animals do, and how often that contribution and their welfare is overlooked. The puzzle shows the breadth of their roles from oxen ploughing fields to horses taking children to school. These animals perform essential jobs that are part of everyday life in many communities around the world. We hope that by encouraging people to look for working animals in the puzzle, that they, and their welfare, become more visible.”
Educational Initiatives and Public Awareness
The survey also explored potential avenues for increasing public understanding. A substantial majority (56%) of respondents believe that incorporating education on working animals into school curricula would significantly boost general awareness. Beyond formal education, many feel that popular culture can play a crucial role, with TV programs (36%), books (34%), and films (29%) being identified as effective mediums.
A third of those surveyed suggested that national awareness days could broaden societal understanding. Encouragingly, 43% feel more informed and conscious of working animals today compared to a decade ago.
A Call for Greater Recognition
Linda Edwards further emphasized the widespread impact of these animals: “Millions of working animals help people earn a living, access essential services and support their families, yet their contribution is too often overlooked. On International Working Animal Day, we are celebrating these remarkable animals and calling for greater recognition of their welfare needs.”
