Systematic Exploitation Exposed on OnlyFans

Content creators on the popular subscription platform OnlyFans are reportedly facing threats, violence, and even trafficking, according to a comprehensive investigation into the British tech company. Research conducted with over 60 individuals revealed widespread exploitation by management agencies designed to boost subscriber numbers and earnings.

Disturbing Statistics Emerge

Analysis indicates that a significant majority, 83%, of surveyed women reported being pressured into creating more explicit content than they were comfortable with. Furthermore, 60% faced threats or blackmail when attempting to leave their contracts. The investigation uncovered alarming allegations of coercion, exploitation, and violence, with evidence suggesting the potential for modern slavery facilitated by some management agencies.

Platform’s Promise vs. Reality

Launched a decade ago, OnlyFans gained immense popularity, particularly during periods of lockdown. The platform promotes empowerment and independence for its creators, whose content ranges from lingerie photography to explicit videos. However, findings suggest that many managers have exerted undue control, leading to creators being locked out of their accounts and payments being diverted.

Financial and Personal Threats

While managers typically receive a 50% commission, some creators reported their managers taking 100% of their earnings. Those who complained or attempted to terminate agreements faced severe threats, including violence and death threats against themselves and their children. Intimidation tactics also included the distribution of fake legal letters and threats to disclose their involvement on OnlyFans to family members.

Investigators gained access to an online forum used by managers, where advice included phrases like “scare the bitch” and “tell her some bullshit,” alongside suggestions of physical violence.

A Case of Extreme Coercion

Rebecca, a 25-year-old single mother from South Wales, recounted her experience after joining OnlyFans last year. Within weeks of signing with an agency, she was allegedly pressured into real-life escort work. When she took steps to regain control of her account due to concerns about excessive fees, she received escalating threats, including her home address being shared and violent intentions expressed towards her and her daughter. The situation culminated in a brick being thrown through her window and a home invasion by masked men, leaving her physically injured and fearing for her life. She stated she did not report her suspicions about her former agency to the police due to fear.

Emotional and Financial Devastation

Another young mother, identified as Leanne, shared her distress at being coerced into creating explicit videos after initially posting lingerie pictures. The video was reportedly sold for a significantly lower amount than initially agreed upon, leaving her feeling “disgusting” and “degraded.”

Calls for Regulation and Industry Change

Even prominent creators on the platform are advocating for change. Lily Phillips, who has achieved significant financial success through OnlyFans, noted that financial success in sex work can lead to jealousy from some individuals. She emphasized the need for greater regulation in management, highlighting it as a vulnerable area where individuals can be exploited. Phillips stated, “As sex workers, people don’t really take what we say seriously… We need help and we need regulations in our industry but people don’t really care, because they don’t see us as human.”

Legal and Human Rights Perspectives

Legal experts believe that significant changes are long overdue. Sophie Kemp, head of public law at Kingsley Napley, described the situation as “systematic,” involving coercion, deception, and potentially human trafficking on a wide scale. She anticipates legal action against OnlyFans, stating, “Given the evidence I’ve seen, and the law that is developing in this area, it’s only a matter of time before OnlyFans faces claims of negligence from creators who have suffered harm because of the systems and the eco-systems which OnlyFans has created.”

Andrew Wallis, CEO of anti-slavery organization Unseen, concurred, identifying patterns of trafficking and modern slavery, including physical violence, harassment, and coercion, where individuals are treated as commodities for profit.

International human rights lawyer Matt Jury suggested that the platform’s alleged inaction on exploitation stems from financial considerations, stating, “They know that acting on these these types of complaints and taking action is going to cut into their bottom line.”

Political Scrutiny and Demands for Accountability

Member of Parliament Tonia Antoniazzi, who chairs an all-party parliamentary group on commercial sexual exploitation, has branded OnlyFans “the biggest pimping website that exists.” She called for immediate accountability, advocating for a select committee to examine the platform and develop relevant legislation for this evolving industry.

Platform’s Response

OnlyFans maintains that it is not involved in third-party management agreements. A spokesperson stated, “OnlyFans was designed to empower creators to control and monetise their content. We take the safety of our users incredibly seriously and invest heavily in measures to protect our community, including strict onboarding processes, payment controls and ongoing account moderation.” The company denied allegations of ignoring issues and emphasized its relationship with creators and fans, not third-party agencies. They asserted compliance with the Online Safety Act and encouraged reporting of any exploitation to both the platform and the police.
