West Coast Eagles player Malakai Champion has been referred to the WAFL tribunal following an alleged incident during a recent match where he reportedly blew his nose on a rival player. The alleged offense occurred in the second quarter of the Eagles’ victory against Swan Districts last Saturday.
Player Demoted to Reserves Amidst Form Slump
Champion, 20, had recently been demoted to the club’s reserves side in an effort to rediscover his form after a series of below-par performances. It is during this match that the serious misconduct charge has arisen.
Allegations of ‘Bushman’s Blow’ Against Opponent
Reports indicate that Champion allegedly performed what has been described as a ‘bushman’s blow’ onto the jumper of an opponent. The allegation specifies that Champion is accused of blocking one nostril and expelling mucus from the other in the direction of an opposing player.
When contacted for comment, West Coast Eagles declined to provide a statement, citing that the matter is currently pending a hearing before the WAFL tribunal.
Precedent for Bodily Fluid Incidents This Season
This incident is not the first involving the use of bodily fluids in the AFL season. Earlier this year, the AFL tribunal issued sanctions against North Melbourne Kangaroos player Tristan Xerri. Xerri was disciplined for smearing his blood on the face of Essendon captain Andrew McGrath.
Champion’s AFL Career Snapshot
Malakai Champion has appeared in 10 AFL matches to date. He made eight appearances during the 2026 season, having debuted in 2025. Across his AFL career, he has kicked four goals.
