Elkford Water Crisis: Hundreds Unserved Amidst Major Pump Failure

Elkford Residents Face Extended Water Outage Following System Failure

Hundreds of residents in the East Kootenay community of Elkford are still without essential water services, with repairs to a critical pump expected to take an additional four to five days. The disruption, which began earlier this week, has significantly impacted daily life for those in the Uptown area.

For residents like Kayty Thiel, even routine household tasks are now a stark reminder of the ongoing water shortage. Her family, along with many others in the Uptown section of the community of approximately 2,700 people in southeastern British Columbia, have been without running water since the start of the week.

Pump Failure Causes Widespread Disruption

District of Elkford crews were dispatched on Wednesday to address an issue within the water system. Their investigation revealed that a pump responsible for supplying water to between 500 and 600 properties had failed. An update provided on Thursday indicated that repairs to this essential pump could extend for approximately four to five days.

While the municipality is exploring the possibility of replacing the pump, this would involve a significant lead time of at least four to twelve weeks. Consequently, prioritizing repairs is currently deemed the most efficient course of action.

Jeff McConnell, Elkford’s chief administrative officer, described the severity of the situation. “As soon as it failed, we realized we’re going to have a very, very significant water loss event and it turned out that we did, we effectively lost our entire reservoir overnight,” McConnell stated. This means some households could face even longer periods without water.

Daily Life Upended by Water Scarcity

The absence of running water has fundamentally altered the daily routines for affected residents. Thiel recounted her family’s experience, noting they first noticed the problem late Tuesday night when their washing machine stopped functioning, followed by the taps going dry.

Simple activities like showering now necessitate trips to relatives’ homes. Flushing toilets requires the use of stored or collected water, and cooking and cleaning demand meticulous planning. Public water distribution points have become essential hubs for residents to fill containers for drinking and other non-potable uses.

Repair Efforts Underway, Community Steps Up

The failed pump system has been transported to a contractor in Calgary for repairs. “These pumps are very significantly large,” McConnell explained. “We can’t just go out and buy another pump and put it into the system.”

Even after the pump is returned and reinstalled, a full return to normal water service will not be immediate. The district has outlined that the system will require time to recharge, followed by flushing and testing before a boil water advisory can be lifted. “We will ensure that we go through all the testing and all the proper lab testing before we are able to lift the boil water order,” officials confirmed.

In the interim, the spirit of community has shone through, with residents and businesses outside the affected zone offering support. At a local car wash, Tessa Aneca and her team began filling bottles for those in need. “You help those that are in need. It’s not even a thought. You just try to step in and do what you can, where you can,” Aneca said, noting they distributed over 300 bottles. “I feel sad for the people of Uptown, but I’m happy that I can help out where I can. Just taking care of our community, right? That’s the most important.””

Thiel acknowledged the inconvenience but also highlighted the immediate willingness of Elkford residents to assist one another. “My sister made us dinner last night, so that was really nice to not have to worry about trying to cook in the kitchen after work and not have to worry about cleaning it up,” she shared.

The District of Elkford plans to provide updates on the repair progress and subsequent steps on its official website. The next update is anticipated on Monday.
