Heroic Rescue as Child Critically Injured After Crocodile Enclosure Incident

A zoo owner’s wife is being hailed a hero after reportedly diving into a crocodile enclosure to rescue a three-year-old boy who was allegedly thrown in by a stranger. The child remains in critical condition following the harrowing incident at Johnsons of Old Hurst in Cambridgeshire.

The young boy was reportedly near the reptile exhibit when he was thrown approximately 15 feet from an elevated viewing platform into an enclosure housing at least 15 crocodiles and alligators. Among the inhabitants are two large Nile crocodiles named Romeo and Cuddles.

Boy Suffers Severe Injuries; Attacker Arrested

It is not yet clear whether the boy sustained his severe injuries, including a broken arm and pelvis, from the fall or from an animal attack. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene yesterday, and an air ambulance was seen arriving.

A 30-year-old man from Norfolk, believed to be unknown to the child, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Reports indicate the individual may have a mental disability and was accompanied by a carer at the time of the incident.

Zoo Owners’ Statement and Facility Closure

Tracey Johnson, the zoo owner’s wife, is said to have pulled the child to safety. Her husband, Andy Johnson, who runs the zoo with his family, released a statement expressing their concern. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family,” he stated. “Out of respect, our tropical house will remain closed until further notice. The rest of the site will remain open.”

Johnsons of Old Hurst is a family-run establishment with a long history of animal care. The crocodiles were initially kept for waste disposal from a family butchery and have since become a central part of the zoo’s attractions, which now houses over 100 animals.

Investigation Underway, Safety Measures Questioned

Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Detective Inspector Verity McCann stated, “At this stage we are speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time of this distressing incident to understand more about the circumstances. We do not believe the man arrested and the child are known to each other.”

Local residents and officials have expressed shock. A neighbor reported hearing numerous sirens and the arrival of an air ambulance. Mike Annicelli, who lives near the zoo, described the enclosure’s design, noting elevated viewing areas, protective glass, and four-foot fencing around walkways, suggesting it would be difficult for a child to fall in accidentally.

Local councillor Charlotte Lowe echoed these sentiments, questioning how the incident could have occurred given the safety features in place. “The only place where people can get over into the enclosure is the walkways which have fencing around them at chest height. I don’t see how a child could have gone in accidentally,” she commented.

The Cambridgeshire Constabulary confirmed the boy was transported to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with serious injuries and is in critical but stable condition. Officers are providing support to the family.

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Darryl Preston, offered his sympathies, stating, “My thoughts go out to the family of the little boy involved in this truly horrific incident. I can only begin to imagine the trauma those involved are going through.”

A spokesperson for Huntingdonshire District Council stated they are working closely with partners, including Cambridgeshire Police, and urged the public not to speculate while inquiries continue.
