Earl of Wessex Makes Surprise Royal Ascot Debut at 18

James, Earl of Wessex, made an unexpected appearance at Royal Ascot on Friday, marking his debut at the prestigious racing event on its fourth day. The 18-year-old son of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh accompanied his mother, the Duchess, to the renowned racecourse.

A Royal Family Outing

The mother and son were observed enjoying their time in the royal box. James was dressed in classic formal wear, featuring a black morning coat and top hat. His blue patterned tie complemented the Duchess’s elegant azure ensemble for the day. The Duchess, aged 61, wore a striking blue dress adorned with a silver and white rectangular pattern, accessorized with a coordinating hat.

This outing at Royal Ascot represents James’s first public engagement since the royal Easter service held at St George’s Chapel in Sandringham. Currently, he is pursuing his A-levels at Radley College, though his future academic or career plans have not yet been publicly disclosed.

Family Connections at the Races

Earlier in the week, on Thursday, James’s grandfather, Christopher Rhys-Jones, was also in attendance, accompanying his daughter, Sophie. Mr. Rhys-Jones, who is celebrating his 95th birthday, appeared to be enjoying an early birthday celebration as he joined his daughter and son-in-law, Prince Edward, at the races.

The presence of Sophie’s father was met with positive reactions from onlookers. Comments highlighted his continued vitality, with one observer noting, “Good that he is still going strong,” while another remarked, “Wow, 94 and looking great.” A third attendee praised his attire, stating, “What a very smartly dressed man! Love the stripes.”

Christopher Rhys-Jones is a regular at Royal Ascot, often seen with members of the royal family. His previous appearance at the event was in 2025, where he was seen socializing with the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, as well as Princess Anne and her husband, Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

Royal Ascot Day Four Highlights

The fourth day of Royal Ascot saw soaring temperatures. King Charles, 77, and Queen Camilla, 78, led the traditional procession in the front carriage, continuing their attendance for the fourth consecutive day. Among the notable attendees was Zara Tindall, who looked elegant in a monochrome polka-dot gown designed by Claire Mischevani.
