Sydney’s Coogee Beach is set to see swimmers return to the water in a show of solidarity and support for a local mother critically injured in a recent shark attack. The community is organizing a swim-out to aid the family of Leah Stewart, who was attacked just one week ago.

Community Rallies After Devastating Attack

Leah Stewart, a 34-year-old mother, was swimming between the flags at Coogee Beach on June 13 when she was reportedly bitten by a suspected white shark. She remains in critical condition following multiple surgeries for severe injuries to her arms and legs, including lacerations and fractures. Her family confirmed earlier this week that one of her arms required amputation.

Organized Return to the Ocean

In an effort to help residents process their fears and encourage a safe return to the ocean, the local surf lifesaving club and Randwick City Council are facilitating community events. These initiatives aim to provide a supportive and shared space for individuals affected by the incident.

Mayor Emphasizes Community Support

Mayor of Randwick City Council, Dylan Parker, stated that the upcoming community swim is designed to foster a safe, supportive, and community-focused environment for those wishing to re-enter the ocean. “Unsurprisingly, the beaches have been a little bit quieter than you would expect,” Cr Parker remarked. He added, “I’ll be going back in, as I’m sure the many hundreds, potentially thousands, will be at this community swim — doing so for a good cause, raising funds for Leah Stewart on the BBQ.”

Enhanced Safety Measures for Swimmers

To enhance swimmer confidence and safety, the event will feature surveillance drones, lifeguards equipped with jet skis, and inflatable rescue boats. Additionally, Lifeline counsellors will be on site to provide support to anyone still grappling with the emotional impact of the attack or seeking further assistance.

Drone Monitoring Becomes Permanent

Following the shark encounter, Surf Life Saving NSW received approval to deploy drones for shark activity monitoring over Coogee Beach as an emergency measure. This temporary authorization from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, which was initially required due to the beach’s location beneath a flight path, has now been made permanent.
