Creator Addresses Backlash Over Sydney Sweeney’s X-Rated Storyline
The creator of the hit HBO series Euphoria, Sam Levinson, has broken his silence regarding the significant backlash surrounding Sydney Sweeney’s character, Cassie Howard, and her foray into OnlyFans and sex work in the show’s third season. The controversial storyline, which has sparked widespread debate among viewers, was a central focus during a recent appearance by Levinson on Real Time With Bill Maher.
Exploring the ‘Massive Enterprise’ of Online Content Creation
Levinson defended the narrative choice, explaining that his inspiration stemmed from the immense financial success of platforms like OnlyFans. “If you look at OnlyFans, it is making as much money as Hollywood. I mean, essentially it’s on par,” Levinson stated. He characterized it not as a niche market but as a “massive enterprise.” He elaborated on the appeal for young individuals, suggesting that the allure of creating their own content and earning significant income can be more attractive than traditional employment. “And so if you’re young, you’re going… ‘I don’t want to go work in a nine to five at this place or that thing. Well, maybe I can just start taking photos of myself?'”
The creator’s intention, he explained, was to delve into “the long-term consequences of that.” He further pondered the psychological impact of social media, where young people are encouraged to view themselves as products or brands. “And I just thought chasing that desire, that kind of fast cash, was an interesting thing to kind of explore,” Levinson recalled.
Addressing Criticism and Character Motivation
Levinson acknowledged the criticism leveled against him and the production team for the explicit scenes involving Sweeney’s character. He questioned whether the same level of scrutiny would be applied if the show were to explicitly endorse such a lifestyle. “You know, we take a fairly critical look at it. It hollows out the individual. You know, you’re constantly just depending on the likes and external validation,” he asserted.
During the conversation, Bill Maher pointed out that Alexa Demie’s character, Maddy Perez, seemed to represent a moral compass within the OnlyFans narrative, referencing a line where Maddy distinguishes herself from sex workers. Levinson agreed, noting Maddy’s role in managing other characters, which he described as “sort of light pimping.”
Social Media’s Influence on Modern Narratives
Levinson also highlighted the role of social media in shaping this storyline, drawing parallels to real-world observations. “I mean, if you’re constantly taking photos of yourself and selling yourself online, it’s the natural evolution of it,” he commented. This perspective underscores how the show aims to reflect contemporary societal trends and their potential outcomes.
The creator’s comments come shortly after Sydney Sweeney herself addressed the controversy, expressing her support for her character’s arc. “I’m playing a character,” Sweeney stated in a recent interview. She explained Cassie’s motivations as stemming from a deep need for external validation and a lack of self-love, suggesting that the character sought fulfillment through the attention of others. “She has a need to be validated by other people,” Sweeney said. “She doesn’t know how to love herself unless someone else loves her.” Sweeney conveyed her understanding of Levinson’s portrayal of Cassie’s journey, adding, “I think she was more excited by the idea of these people loving her and knowing who she is and feeling like her world isn’t small.”
Levinson also touched upon the decision to conclude Euphoria with its third season, describing it as a “natural conclusion.” The series, which has garnered significant attention for its unflinching portrayal of teenage life and its challenges, is set to wrap up its run.
