Devastating Blaze Engulfs Popular Tourist Resort
Scenes of panic and displacement unfolded at a popular tourist resort in the Dominican Republic following a devastating fire that has claimed the life of one woman and left approximately 1,700 holidaymakers without accommodations. The blaze, which erupted Friday at the Viva Dominicus Beach Resort in Bayahibe, spread with alarming speed through the complex, leaving a significant portion in ruins.
Initial reports indicate the fire began in the reception area before rapidly engulfing bungalows near the infinity pool, buffet restaurants, the main pool area, and several other structures. Witnesses described thick black smoke billowing into the sky for hours as flames tore through what appeared to be at least a dozen buildings.
Tragic Loss of Life and Widespread Displacement
Dominican emergency officials have confirmed the identity of the deceased as Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old Italian reality television personality. In addition to the fatality, three individuals were transported to medical facilities for treatment, while six others, including guests, visitors, and emergency responders, received attention at the scene for injuries or smoke inhalation.
The inferno has left around 1,700 tourists in a precarious situation. Many guests not only lost their belongings but also their passports and other essential identification documents, which were destroyed in the fire. This has complicated efforts for them to return home.
Witness Accounts and Official Response
Social media buzzed with firsthand accounts of the harrowing experience. One traveler described the morning as “shocking,” noting the extensive damage to the resort. Another commented on the distressing sight of guests carrying their luggage along the beach, expressing relief that everyone managed to escape the flames.
Concerns were also raised about the rapid spread of the fire, with some guests questioning the safety of structures with palm-thatched roofs. “Every time I look up at the roofs that are made out of leaves, I wonder, how long would I have to get out of here if a fire started,” one person remarked.
Officials stated that the resort was operating at 84 percent capacity at the time of the incident. The rapid spread of the blaze has been attributed to the flammable nature of sections of the palm-thatched roofing, exacerbated by windy conditions, according to the Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center.
Assistance for Affected Tourists
Hotel executives confirmed that efforts are underway to assist tourists who lost their identity documents. Coordination with various embassies is in progress to facilitate the return of affected visitors to their home countries. Many guests have already been relocated to other hotels in the Bayahibe and Punta Cana regions.
While the fire has been brought under control, investigations are ongoing to determine its exact cause and the specific circumstances surrounding Ms. Valentino’s death. The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center has assured that tourist activities in Bayahibe and surrounding areas are continuing as usual.
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office confirmed they are in contact with local authorities and are prepared to offer consular assistance to any British nationals affected by the incident.
