Princess Kate Marks Royal Ascot Comeback with Family Support

The Princess of Wales made a radiant return to the prestigious Royal Ascot racing festival, accompanied by her mother, Carole Middleton, and sister-in-law, Alizée Thevenet. This marked her first appearance at the historic event since her cancer diagnosis in early 2024, drawing cheers from the gathered crowds.

Her last attendance at Ascot was in 2023, shortly after becoming the Princess of Wales. Opting to skip the event last year during her recovery and return to public duties following chemotherapy, Kate, 44, opted for a striking yellow Roksanda dress. This same elegant gown was previously worn in 2022 during a carriage procession with the Prince of Wales, who had recently celebrated his 44th birthday. A touching gesture was noted as Prince William sported a matching yellow buttonhole, a subtle tribute to his wife.

A Warm Welcome and Family Solidarity

The Princess was met with enthusiastic reception as she arrived in the traditional carriage procession alongside the Duke and Duchess of Richmond and Gordon. Reports indicate a palpable excitement from the crowd, with cheers erupting upon her appearance. She smiled and waved to onlookers before curtsying to the King and Queen.

During the procession, Prince William was overheard engaging with well-wishers, humorously responding to a comment about his beloved Aston Villa football team. The family appeared in high spirits, a sentiment echoed amidst news of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s anticipated return to the UK next month with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, for the first time since 2022.

A Cherished Family Day Out

Away from the formalities of the parade ring, Kate, who recently undertook her first overseas work trip to Italy post-diagnosis, shared a day of family camaraderie. Her mother, Carole Middleton, 71, and sister-in-law, Alizée Thevenet, 36, joined her for what was described as a “girls’ day out,” arriving together on the second day of the event.

The close bond between Kate and her mother was evident in the royal box, where they were seen laughing and holding hands. Carole Middleton has consistently been a source of support for her daughter, particularly in raising Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Observers noted the strength and joy derived from this familial connection, highlighting Kate’s ability to relax and enjoy the company of her closest family members during her return to public life.

Carole Middleton also engaged in warm conversations with other royal family members, including Lady Sarah Chatto, the daughter of Princess Margaret. Photographer Samir Hussein, who captured moments in the royal box, described an “instant warmth” between Kate and Carole upon their reunion, noting their shared laughter and enjoyment of the afternoon.

Sisterly Support and Stylish Re-wears

The event also featured a rare public appearance by Alizée Thevenet, who was warmly greeted by Kate with a kiss. The wife of Kate’s brother, James Middleton, typically maintains a lower profile but has recently attended significant family events, including a Christmas carol service. The sisters-in-law were observed in animated conversation, both appearing to be in good spirits.

Both Kate and Carole demonstrated a commitment to sustainable fashion by re-wearing outfits. Kate sported her yellow Roksanda dress, previously seen in Jamaica in 2022 and at Wimbledon, paired with a Jane Taylor London hat, a pearl bracelet belonging to Diana, Princess of Wales, and diamond earrings previously owned by Queen Elizabeth II. Carole Middleton chose her mother-of-the-bride outfit from Pippa Middleton’s 2017 wedding, a blush-pink Catherine Walker dress, accessorised with an Emmy London bag and shoes, and Kiki McDonough earrings.

Alizée Thevenet, a financial expert, paid homage to her French heritage with a white dress and straw boater, accessorised with a Longchamp tote bag and Sezane earrings. She was joined in the royal box by Lady Gabriella Kingston, who looked elegant in an icy-blue dress by Claire Mischevani.

Royal Couple’s Reunited Presence

Prince William appeared visibly delighted by Kate’s presence, offering her his hand and staying close as they greeted other royal family members. Their visible closeness was noted, contrasting with William’s attendance the previous year. The couple were later seen in conversation with former England football manager Sir Gareth Southgate, likely discussing upcoming matches.

New Faces and Racing Enthusiasm

The opening day of Royal Ascot also saw the debut of Harriet Phillips, who married Peter Phillips earlier in the month. She was warmly welcomed by the royal family, including the King and Queen, with Princess Anne offering her support. Harriet wore a Suzannah London dress and a Jane Taylor London hat.

Olympic equestrian Zara Tindall and her husband, former rugby player Mike Tindall, also attended. A playful moment occurred when Mike Tindall recreated a prank on the King that he had previously played on Queen Elizabeth II. The King was seen to be delighted by the interaction.

The racing itself proved somewhat disappointing for the King and Queen, whose favored horse finished last in the Ascot Stakes. Queen Camilla, however, expressed her love for the event, describing it as “the best of British” and a source of pleasure, pageantry, and fun for all attendees.

Other royals in attendance included Princess Anne, known for her sustainable fashion choices, and the Duchess of Edinburgh, who opted for a more unconventional black dress on one day before choosing a traditional blue ensemble. The Duchess of Gloucester supported The King’s Foundation, wearing a hat created by a graduate of their millinery program.

Celebrity Glamour at the Races

The event also drew a host of celebrities. Kelly Osbourne wore a distinctive bat-shaped hat in tribute to her late father, Ozzy Osbourne. Actress Vanessa Williams, currently starring in “The Devil Wears Prada” in the West End, opted for a chic burnt-orange dress. Designer Jade Holland Cooper showcased a polka-dot gown from her own brand.

Singer James Blunt and his wife Sofia Wellesley enjoyed a day out, as did former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell-Horner and her husband Christian Horner. Content creator Lydia Millen and her husband Ali Gordon coordinated their outfits, with Lydia describing her dress as inspired by her garden.

“Bridgerton” actress Golda Rosheuvel and reality television personality Maura Higgins were also spotted, alongside figures such as Lord Lloyd-Webber and Mary Earps.

Actor Stanley Tucci added Hollywood flair to the carriage procession on the third day, travelling with his wife, literary agent Felicity Blunt. His presence highlighted his growing connection with the King, following their collaboration on sustainable food initiatives.
