Player Injured in Controversial World Cup Incident

A New Zealand international player experienced a painful injury during a recent World Cup match, requiring him to be checked by medical staff and change his kit. The incident occurred in the 66th minute of the game when the player, Ben Old, was involved in a collision deep in the opponent’s half.

Old, 23, appeared to win the ball before being brought down by an opposing player, Yasser Ibrahim. Following the initial contact, Ibrahim’s follow-through resulted in him stepping on Old, leaving the midfielder on the ground in visible distress. No foul was called by the referee, and play continued with the opposing team quickly launching an attack that led to a goal.

Player Describes Painful Collision

Speaking after the match, Old recounted the moment of impact. “I feel like he’s fouled me,” he stated. “As he’s gone to fall down, he’s fallen down on my groin and ripped my shorts and underwear. I was worried because it was a really sharp pain, but it’s all fine, I’ve been checked by the doctor.”

The player expressed his frustration at the lack of a free-kick call, especially given the ensuing goal. “It’s frustrating because that led to the goal afterward,” Old commented. “I was in pain from the injury. I didn’t know what was going on there. It’s frustrating, but they scored again after that so we can’t blame it on that.”

He further elaborated on the sequence of events. “I’ve done that [won the ball] and gone onto the ground thinking I’ve won the free-kick, but he wasn’t given it. Then he stepped on me and caused a lot of pain. I was freaking out, wondering what was happening. It’s frustrating but the referee has made his decision and we have to accept it.”

Visible Signs of Impact

The physical toll of the collision was evident, with Old requiring new shorts due to damage and visible bloodstains. Teammates on the field and substitutes warming up on the sideline appeared shocked by the incident. One player, Chris Wood, was seen remonstrating with the referee about the play.

Commentators initially expressed confusion regarding Old’s presence in the technical area, speculating about potential substitution issues for New Zealand. The match saw the opposing team eventually secure a victory after New Zealand had taken an early lead.
