Leeds Secure Harry Wilson Signing, Dashing Fulham’s Contract Plans
A deal has been reached for Harry Wilson to join Leeds, effectively ending Fulham’s aspirations of retaining the winger on a new contract. Reports indicate the Wales international is set to commit to a long-term agreement at Elland Road, having opted against extending his stay in west London.
Fulham had expressed a strong desire to keep Wilson, who was recently named the club’s player of the season. An offer to extend his current contract, which is due to expire on June 30, was reportedly put forward. However, the 29-year-old has now committed his future to Leeds and is expected to undergo a medical.
Wilson’s Standout Season and Transfer Speculation
Wilson was previously close to a move to Leeds on the final day of the transfer window last summer. At that time, Fulham withdrew from negotiations late in the process after failing to secure a transfer for then-Chelsea winger Tyrique George. Despite this, Wilson went on to have a highly successful campaign at Craven Cottage, contributing 11 goals and eight assists across all competitions.
The winger attracted interest from several other clubs, including Aston Villa and Everton. The departure of manager Marco Silva, who initially brought Wilson to Fulham for a reported £12 million transfer in 2021, is being considered as a potential factor in the player’s decision to leave. Analysis suggests that the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the managerial position at Fulham, following Silva’s move to Benfica to replace Jose Mourinho, is influencing players’ decisions regarding their futures for the upcoming season.
While former Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa is rumored to be a leading candidate for the managerial role, sources confirm that at least two other contenders remain in contention to succeed Silva.
Managerial Praise for Wilson
Wilson’s most productive season in a Fulham shirt concluded last term. In January, Silva publicly acknowledged the club’s obligation to make every effort to secure the winger on a new contract, highlighting his importance to the team.
