Hooked on History: Netflix’s “Alias Grace” Captivates Viewers

A six-episode period drama on Netflix is drawing significant praise from viewers, with many describing it as a brain-“messing” and “outstanding” true crime story. The series, titled Alias Grace, transports audiences to 19th Century Canada, weaving a narrative across two distinct timelines.

A Tale of Murder and Mystery

The drama’s central events unfold with a brutal double homicide in 1843. The victims are identified as Scottish gentleman farmer Thomas Kinnear and his pregnant housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery. The ensuing investigation led to the conviction of housemaid Grace Marks and stablehand James McDermott. McDermott was subsequently hanged, while Marks received a commuted life sentence. Throughout the ordeal, both individuals reportedly blamed each other for the crimes.

Adding another layer to the narrative, the series revisits the case 16 years later. In this timeline, a psychiatrist endeavors to determine if one of the convicted killers warrants a pardon based on grounds of insanity.

Literary Roots and Critical Acclaim

The compelling true story at the heart of Alias Grace is not a recent invention. The 2017 production, a collaboration between CBC and Netflix, is based on the acclaimed 1996 novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood, the celebrated author of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Audience reactions highlight the series’ quality. Online reviews frequently use terms like “outstanding,” “so well told,” and “brilliantly acted.” One viewer commented on the “perfect balance of beauty and horror,” while another deemed it “excellent” and “not to be missed.” The unique way the story unfolds has also been a point of discussion. One fan noted, “The way the story messes with your brain is sooo good.” They elaborated that while the pacing is not typically fast or dramatic, the series “just pulls you in slowly and suddenly you’re completely hooked.”

Star-Studded Cast Brings History to Life

The series features a notable cast bringing these historical figures to life. Sarah Gadon, known for her role in Wayward Pines, portrays Grace Marks. Edward Holcroft, who appeared in Kingsman, takes on the role of psychiatrist Dr. Simon Jordan. Kerr Logan from CB Strikes plays James McDermott. The victims, Thomas Kinnear and Nancy Montgomery, are portrayed by Paul Gross of Due South and Anna Paquin, an icon from True Blood.

Atwood’s Creative Process

Margaret Atwood herself has spoken about her approach to writing the novel. Describing the book’s construction, Atwood stated, “The book itself is ‘pieced’ like a quilt — with contrasting views — every faction at the time had their version of Grace. Demon or innocent? Even — tall or short?” She further explained her creative freedom, noting, “But in the gaps in the story — the places where evidence was not there or had gone missing — I felt free to invent.”

Alias Grace is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
