Decades after she became known as Joan Rivers, the iconic comedian’s daughter, Melissa Rivers, has shed light on the origins of her mother’s famous stage name. While Joan Rivers passed away in 2014, her legacy and sharp wit continue to resonate. The name change itself, from Joan Alexandra Molinsky to Joan Rivers, remains a subject of curiosity for many.

A Family’s Uncertainty

Melissa Rivers recently shared on social media that the exact story behind her mother’s chosen surname is not definitively known by the family. “A lot of people ask me where the name Rivers comes from. And I’m going to tell you the true and official story,” Melissa stated, before humorously admitting, “We’re not really sure.”

According to Melissa, her mother once offered a somewhat vague explanation: “It was the last name of one of her managers, or that one of her managers suggested it. And it just sounded good and stuck. So there’s the big story.”

The Drive for an Acting Career

Joan Rivers herself had previously spoken about her decision to adopt a new identity for professional reasons. In 2007, she explained to the Television Academy that the name change was driven by her aspiration to become an actress. “I wanted to be an actress,” she stated. “I thought, ‘Just get me some work, I’ll change my name.’ The first agent that sent me out was a man named Larry Rivers and I said, ‘Okay I’m Joan Rivers.'”

A Career Defined by Laughter

Joan Rivers, who passed away at the age of 81, was a trailblazer in the comedy world. Her career, which began in the late 1950s, saw her evolve from stage actress to a beloved television personality. At the time of her passing, Melissa Rivers released a heartfelt statement acknowledging her mother’s death. “It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers,” she had said. “She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends.” Melissa also expressed gratitude for the medical staff at Mount Sinai Hospital and the global outpouring of support received by her family.

She concluded her statement by reflecting on her mother’s greatest joy: “My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”

Joan Rivers had been in critical condition following complications during surgery on her vocal cords. She was moved to Mount Sinai Hospital and taken off life support on September 4, 2014.
