Neymar Retires from International Football After World Cup Exit

Published on

Neymar, widely regarded as the standout Brazilian player of his generation, has reportedly announced his retirement from international football following Brazil’s unexpected World Cup elimination. The 34-year-old forward’s decision comes after his team suffered a shocking defeat against Norway, a result that marks Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1966.

The prolific forward concludes his illustrious international career as the all-time leading goalscorer for the Brazilian men’s national team, having netted 80 goals in 129 appearances. Despite his considerable achievements, a late penalty converted by Neymar was not enough to prevent Brazil’s downfall in the tournament.

Speculation surrounding Neymar’s international future has been ongoing for the past year, with several hints suggesting that this World Cup would be his last. Reports emerging from the Brazilian media on Sunday night indicated that he has indeed played his final match for the Selecao.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti Vows to Continue Despite Defeat

Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has stated his intention to remain in his post, despite the team’s disappointing performance and subsequent World Cup exit. The Brazilian squad was notably dominated in possession by Norway, ultimately succumbing to two late goals from Erling Haaland.

Ancelotti described the 2-1 defeat as “bitter” but expressed his commitment to overseeing the necessary rebuilding process for the national team. This match also marked the final international appearance for veteran midfielder Casemiro.

“As long as I’m passionate, I want to keep doing this job,” Ancelotti stated, referencing his contract which extends until 2030. “We have to think about it. It’s very evident that in the midfield we have to move some players. We need some young talent. We need some high level players coming into Brazilian football to be able to play for the national team in the future.”

He added, “We continue to do our jobs and look for new ideas the same thing we did this year. That is football for you. That is sports. Sometimes you have to manage the sadness and bitter taste of a defeat. I am very used to that. We are going to take this defeat and use it as fuel for the new cycle.”

Key Moments and Tactical Decisions Under Scrutiny

A pivotal moment in the match was Bruno Guimaraes’ missed penalty in the first half. Manager Ancelotti defended his decision to allow Guimaraes to take the spot-kick, rather than Vinicius Jr., who had been fouled to earn the penalty.

Ancelotti explained the rationale behind the decision: “We did statistics. The best person would be Neymar and then Raphinha and after Bruno Guimaraes and after Bruno, Martinelli. So we chose Bruno Guimaraes as we felt he would be the best.”

Norway’s victory was significantly bolstered by the clinical performance of Erling Haaland. The Manchester City striker expressed his elation following the historic win for his nation.

“Maybe this will write history in Norway,” Haaland remarked. “Everyone just need to enjoy themselves. This is just an insane day. It’s one of the most insane days in Norwegian history. Just enjoy it, embrace it and enjoy the moment.”

Brazil’s Diminished Possession and Ancelotti’s Defense

The match highlighted a significant shift in Brazil’s traditional dominance, as the team struggled to assert control, holding only 35 percent of possession against Norway. Norway completed 617 passes compared to Brazil’s 271, underscoring their command of the game.

Despite the statistics, Ancelotti defended his team’s tactical approach. “We knew they could play with this style and we didn’t want to press high,” he said. “Because Norway was locking their defensive field, applying too much pressure was a risk.”

While Norway’s manager, Stale Solbakken, saw his tactical substitutions pay off, Ancelotti’s own changes also drew attention. The introduction of young player Endrick, who missed a significant chance, and later Neymar and fresh midfield legs, were part of Ancelotti’s strategy to inject dynamism into the team.

“Endrick came in to give a lot more depth to the match,” Ancelotti explained regarding his substitutions. “That worked for one minute or two and then to bring in that quality to the final third we brought in Neymar, with Endrick on the right. Then we changed Bruno because he was tired, so fresh legs in the midfield.”

Conclusion: A New Era for Brazilian Football

Neymar’s departure from international football signifies the end of an era for the Brazilian national team. Coupled with the retirement of Casemiro and the early World Cup exit, the team faces a period of significant transition. Manager Carlo Ancelotti’s commitment to rebuilding and integrating new talent suggests a focus on future success, aiming to restore Brazil to its former glory on the world stage.
