Bob MacIntyre’s Calm Start at The Open Amid Drone Distraction

Published on

Scottish golfer Bob MacIntyre navigated early challenges, including a drone disrupting his opening tee shot, to mount an impressive early charge at The Open Championship held at Royal Birkdale. MacIntyre acknowledged before the tournament that the event would demand significant discipline and patience, a prediction that proved accurate even before his first stroke.

Early Morning Serenity Shattered by Drone

As MacIntyre prepared to tee off at 7:19 am, the conditions at the sun-drenched Royal Birkdale links were near perfect: calm, with clear skies and the gentle sound of birdsong. However, the tranquility was abruptly broken when a drone entered his line of sight just as he was about to strike his opening shot. Known for occasional displays of frustration, particularly noted at The Masters in April, this incident could have easily derailed his focus.

Reflecting on the moment, MacIntyre described hearing the drone approach and hoping it would pass overhead. “Please, just keep flying over the top of me,” he recalled thinking, only for the drone to hover directly above him. “Then they announced me on the tee, and I was like: ‘I’m not hitting until that drone is out of the way’,” he stated. Fortunately, the situation was resolved when someone intervened. MacIntyre added, “I knew from the practice days this was going to be a real test of my patience, real test of my mind, and I thought I did a great job.”

A Strong Opening Round Despite Setbacks

MacIntyre’s composure held firm. He recovered brilliantly to sink a remarkable 45-foot putt for birdie on the first hole. His strong start continued on the second, where he hit his approach shot to within two feet of the pin, securing another birdie. The early excitement drew a growing crowd, following MacIntyre and his playing partners, Rickie Fowler and Alex Fitzpatrick.

The only blemish on his scorecard for the day came at the 8th hole, where he missed the green and failed to get up and down, resulting in a bogey. This proved to be his sole dropped shot of the round.

Masterful Back Nine and Strategic Play

MacIntyre played the back nine with exceptional skill, a performance made more notable by his earlier admission of uncertainty regarding his strategy for the inward holes. He added two more birdies, including another long-range putt of 40 feet on the 12th, followed by another on the 14th.

Even a potentially troublesome situation on the final hole was expertly managed. After pulling his second shot towards a grandstand, MacIntyre executed a superb flop shot from a difficult lie, leaving himself a simple tap-in for par. This resilience contributed to an opening round score of three-under-par 67, a performance MacIntyre optimistically described as “almost the perfect round of golf.”

Mature Display and Tactical Acumen

The round showcased a display of golf marked by class and maturity. MacIntyre demonstrated calmness under pressure and effectively executed his game plan. He strategically opted for long irons and his rescue club off the tee rather than frequently using his driver, a decision that often left him further down the fairway than his playing partners. However, his lower score compared to Fowler and Fitzpatrick underscored the wisdom of his cautious approach.

“It was a test of discipline and almost acceptance, taking a lot of short clubs off the tee,” MacIntyre explained. “My job was to stay out of the pot bunkers. I feel I was very, very cautious off the tee. But the way I’ve been playing, approach play has been really good.”

Handling Pressure and Looking Ahead

MacIntyre’s only visible sign of frustration occurred on the par-five 17th, after pulling his second shot into a bunker. “You idiot,” he exclaimed to himself, but he recovered with a skillful bunker shot and two putts for par, avoiding further damage.

With the opening round complete, MacIntyre could relax in the afternoon heat, which approached 30 degrees Celsius. Instead of an ice bath, he planned to unwind in a hot tub with his young son, Findlay, aiming to disconnect from golf until the next day.

“It’s literally about sticking to the plan and just playing good golf,” the Scot commented. “I said to you guys at the start of the week, I know my good golf is good enough to get in about it. That’s the plan. Just go home now and chill out, probably go in the hot tub with the wee man.” He added, “It’s not too hot. It’s like a swimming pool. It’s like a cool bath. We’ll go home and chill out and think about golf again probably tomorrow when I’m driving in.”

Contending for the Claret Jug

MacIntyre’s performance signals a potential strong showing this week. Despite a season of inconsistent form, he appeared more comfortable and attuned to the challenges of Royal Birkdale during his opening round. While acknowledging that no prizes are awarded after day one, the encouraging performance sets him up as a potential contender for the Claret Jug if he can maintain this level of play over the subsequent rounds.

“I could happily retire if I won an Open, won any major,” MacIntyre admitted. “If something happened, I could happily walk away from the game of golf. Yeah, I’ll openly say it. I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face. It would be all my goals that I ever dreamed of complete if I done that, but there’s a long way to go.”
