Oscar Piastri Confirms McLaren Stay Amidst Verstappen Speculation

Published on

Oscar Piastri has definitively addressed rumors linking him with a departure from McLaren, stating his firm intention to remain with the team for the upcoming season. The Australian driver directly refuted speculation that four-time world champion Max Verstappen might replace him, offering his clearest response to date amidst ongoing conjecture about Verstappen’s own future with Red Bull.

Piastri Reaffirms Commitment to McLaren

During media day ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, Piastri was asked directly about his plans for the 2027 season. His unequivocal answer was: “Yes.” The 23-year-old driver expressed confidence in his position, highlighting the strong support he has received from McLaren’s leadership, including CEO Zak Brown and Team Principal Andrea Stella.

“I didn’t realise it was a point of contention,” Piastri commented. “Obviously, I’ve seen and heard some of the rumours, and for me, I am very comfortable with where I am and where I sit, and Zak and Andrea have been great through that and very reassuring.”

He acknowledged the ongoing speculation surrounding Max Verstappen, noting, “Clearly, Max is not feeling in a great position at the moment and is exploring options. It was the same thing last year with him and Mercedes, so it is nothing new, but I am very happy with where I am and where it is going.”

Piastri also indicated that he is not concerned by suggestions that McLaren might be engaging in behind-the-scenes discussions with Verstappen. “I don’t know. I’m not really that bothered,” he stated. “I think it’s important for people to know where things sit, where the market sits. Any information you can get is good. I trust the team here and the things I’ve been told and the belief in me, so that’s all I really care about.”

Manager Dismisses Exit Reports

These statements follow similar assurances from Piastri’s manager, former Formula One driver Mark Webber. Webber had previously dismissed reports suggesting Piastri was seeking a move away from McLaren, characterizing such claims as “nonsense” and attributing much of the reporting to “fiction.”

Verstappen Remains Non-Committal on Red Bull Future

In contrast to Piastri’s clear declarations, Max Verstappen adopted a more reserved stance when questioned about his own future plans. Despite being under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028, the reigning world champion declined multiple opportunities to confirm his continued presence with the team for the next season.

When asked for an update on his future, Verstappen simply replied, “No.” Further pressing on the speculation yielded a terse, “Nothing.” Pressed again on whether he remained fully committed to Red Bull for 2027, he reiterated, “I said there is nothing to say.”

Verstappen later emphasized his desire to avoid definitive statements about his future, stating, “I don’t want to go here, and say yes or no and this or that about my future. I have said many times about my future that if there is something new [to say], I will say it myself.”

Focus on Red Bull’s Performance

The Dutch driver indicated that his primary focus is on assisting Red Bull in overcoming the challenges presented by Formula One’s new regulations and improving the team’s performance. “No, I’m just busy trying to make sure we take the right steps here,” Verstappen explained. “Outside of that, I had my sister’s wedding as well, so everything will come naturally. That’s always been the case.”

Belgian Grand Prix Outlook for McLaren

The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps holds significance for Piastri, marking a return to a circuit where he secured a victory last year. However, he acknowledged that McLaren still faces development challenges to consistently compete with front-running teams like Mercedes and Ferrari.

“For this weekend I’m not sure where we’re going to sit,” Piastri admitted. “We’re going to be similar to where we have been which is third or fourth quickest car depending on how competitive Red Bull look really. That’s just the reality of where we are at the moment.”

Looking ahead, Piastri expressed hope that upcoming upgrades will provide a performance boost. “Going forwards, hopefully the new parts we can bring to the car will help us out. We’re under no illusion that we’re going to need more than the upgrades we’re bringing the next few races but hopefully, it’s a positive step in the right direction and we can at least be there to pick up the pieces.”

The driver’s confident stance on his McLaren future, juxtaposed with Verstappen’s deliberate ambiguity, sets a compelling backdrop for the upcoming race weekend as the driver market continues to be a subject of intense interest within the Formula One community.
