Samantha Armytage Joins Today Show Amid Host Search

Published on

Channel Nine’s flagship breakfast program, the Today show, is undergoing a significant presenter change next week as veteran broadcaster Samantha Armytage steps in as a temporary co-host. Armytage, 49, will join Michael Willesee Jr. at the desk as the network continues its extensive search for a permanent replacement for Karl Stefanovic. This move places Armytage in direct competition with her former colleague, Natalie Barr, who co-hosts Channel Seven’s rival breakfast show, Sunrise.

Veteran Presenter Takes the Helm

Samantha Armytage is no stranger to the demanding world of breakfast television. She spent eight years with Channel Seven’s Sunrise before resigning in March 2021 to focus on family life. More recently, in September 2024, Armytage joined Channel Nine to host the reality dating series The Golden Bachelor. Her current appointment to the Today show is understood to be a short-term arrangement, allowing Nine to explore various hosting possibilities.

The Today show has been in a state of flux following the departure of Karl Stefanovic last month. Stefanovic exited the program after a controversial interview with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson. Adding to the presenting void, co-presenter Sarah Abo is currently on maternity leave, creating an urgent need for stable on-air talent.

Assessing the Field for a Permanent Co-Host

Industry sources indicate that the network is actively evaluating potential candidates for the permanent co-hosting role. Reports suggest that both Samantha Armytage and Sylvia Jeffreys, 40, were considered for fill-in positions in the coming weeks, with the aim of assessing their suitability to lead the struggling breakfast program. This period of testing different on-air partnerships is seen as crucial as Nine strategizes for the future of its flagship morning show.

The search for a permanent male co-host to succeed Stefanovic is reportedly proving more challenging than finding a female counterpart. While several strong female presenters are being considered, the network is facing difficulties in identifying a suitable male anchor. Channel Nine is expected to leverage Sarah Abo’s maternity leave as an extended opportunity to trial various on-air combinations before making any definitive long-term decisions about the show’s lineup.

Potential New Roles in News and Broadcasting

Beyond the main co-hosting position, the Today show may also see changes in its newsreading segment. Jane Goldsmith, a long-serving newsreader for Newcastle’s NBN News, is reportedly a leading contender for the newsreading role on the program. This suggests a broader review of the Today show’s presenting team is underway.

Ratings Challenges and Strategic Decisions

The Today show has been facing considerable pressure in the ratings, consistently trailing behind Channel Seven’s Sunrise. This competitive landscape intensifies the importance of the current shake-up and the network’s strategic decisions regarding its on-air talent.

In a related development, the Nine Network has reportedly dropped the new radio show The Long Weekend
