Nigel Farage’s Secret Reform UK Comeback Deal Revealed

Published on

Nigel Farage reportedly finalized a secret agreement to return as the leader of Reform UK months before the 2024 general election was officially called. This deal, negotiated between March and April 2024 with then-leader Richard Tice, was allegedly overseen by George Cottrell, an individual with a history of financial convictions who had been providing financial support to Farage. The revelations raise significant questions about the timeline of Farage’s return to frontline politics and his previous statements regarding his political status.

Details of the Reform UK Leadership Agreement

According to reports, the terms of the pact stipulated that upon Farage resuming leadership, Reform UK would either repay or write off over £1 million in outstanding loans previously extended to the party by a company associated with Richard Tice. This agreement was reportedly presented to the party’s treasurer in mid-May 2024. This timeline appears to conflict with Farage’s public assertions that he did not decide to re-engage in front-line politics until June.

Farage had previously cited this later timeline to explain why he did not declare a substantial gift of £5 million from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne, nor in-kind support from George Cottrell. His argument was that prior to June 3, 2024, he was acting as a media personality rather than a politician. Under parliamentary rules, MPs are obligated to declare any benefits linked to their political activities received in the 12 months preceding an election. Farage maintained he was not subject to these rules as he considered himself outside of active politics during that period.

Potential Discrepancies and Legal Scrutiny

Sources within Reform UK suggested to investigators that the agreement was drafted to accommodate the possibility of Farage’s return, rather than confirming it as a certainty. It was also indicated that Farage initially intended to concentrate on campaigning for Donald Trump’s presidential bid in the United States.

Mehrtash A’Zami, who served as Reform UK’s treasurer at the time, stated that he was informed about the arrangement before the election was announced. Reports suggest he was subsequently instructed to implement a repayment schedule once Farage officially took over the leadership. These disclosures have intensified scrutiny on Reform UK’s adherence to electoral law, particularly as the party is already facing a Metropolitan Police investigation into the origins of its donations.

Questions Surrounding Repayments and Declarations

Further details emerged regarding a specific repayment made on June 10, 2024, shortly after the election was called. On this date, Reform UK reportedly transferred £200,000. However, instead of being sent to Tice’s company, Tisun Investments, which was the original lender, the funds were allegedly directed to a personal account belonging to Richard Tice himself. Electoral Commission filings reportedly indicate that the repayment was made to the company, not to Tice personally. If this information is inaccurate, it could constitute a potential criminal offense.

Party insiders reportedly indicated that the error in the payment destination was later recognized by officials. While there was a proposal to inform the Electoral Commission about the discrepancy, it appears the watchdog was never officially notified. Subsequently, the party’s accounts were filed in a manner that suggested the company had received the repayment.

The former treasurer, Mehrtash A’Zami, has stated that he relied on his staff to manage the payment process. He claims he only became aware that the funds had been sent to Tice’s personal account after the fact. A’Zami also asserted that he attempted to notify the Electoral Commission about the issue but was prevented from doing so.

Departure and Ongoing Investigations

By February 2025, A’Zami had departed from Reform UK and returned to business activities in Dubai. His departure, according to reports, stemmed from disagreements concerning the management of payments and invoices. Nigel Farage, who resigned as the Member of Parliament for Clacton following public criticism over his association with George Cottrell, is now contesting a by-election. He is also currently subject to two parliamentary investigations concerning undisclosed benefits.

A spokesperson for Reform UK has dismissed these latest claims as “misinformation.” The party suggested the information was derived from unlawfully obtained documents or was the result of “mischief-making by disgruntled former staff.” The spokesperson added that all relevant repayments were duly declared to the Electoral Commission.

Conclusion: A Complex Political Landscape

The revelations surrounding the secret deal and the subsequent repayment issues paint a complex picture of Reform UK’s internal operations and financial dealings in the lead-up to and aftermath of the 2024 general election. The timing of the agreement, the nature of the repayment, and the alleged discrepancies in reporting to the Electoral Commission continue to be subjects of intense scrutiny. These developments add further layers to the ongoing investigations into undisclosed benefits and donations, impacting Nigel Farage’s political standing and the party’s compliance with electoral regulations.
