Josh Kerr: ‘I’m on a Different Level’ in 1500m

In the aftermath of his Commonwealth Games gold medal victory, Scottish runner Josh Kerr revealed a grounded and approachable personality, spending over half an hour engaging with fans for autographs and selfies late into the evening. Despite his formidable on-track presence, Kerr demonstrated a willingness to connect, even sharing lighthearted admonishments with children and their parents. He politely declined a request for his distinctive Oakley sunglasses, explaining they were worn during his recent mile world record achievement, underscoring his dedication to his craft.

Kerr’s Disciplined Approach to Athletics and Life

The morning after his victory, Kerr admitted to having only about 15 minutes of sleep, a testament to his late-night fan engagement and perhaps a touch of celebratory coffee. This minimal rest, however, did not hinder his ability to discuss his rigorous training regimen, the use of red-light therapy, and his perspective on the 1500m world record. Kerr indicated that while he shares training insights on social media, he deliberately keeps personal details private to shield his family from potential criticism and to maintain a strategic advantage over competitors. He described a distinct “persona” that emerges on the track, contrasting with the more relaxed atmosphere often seen among athletes in the call room before a race.

During the mile race itself, Kerr showcased his characteristic determination. Despite being momentarily boxed in with 500 meters remaining, he executed a powerful surge to secure victory. He expressed confidence in his ability, stating, “There’s not much you can do in a mile race that’s going to beat me. I’ve got great speed and I’m running in front of a home crowd.” While acknowledging the exceptional talent of rivals like Jake Wightman, Timothy Cheruiyot, and Cam Myers, Kerr asserted his belief that he currently operates on a superior level in the 1500m discipline.

Monastic Lifestyle and Training Philosophy

Kerr’s dedication extends to his highly disciplined lifestyle. Upon arriving at his hotel past midnight, his post-victory celebration consisted of physiotherapy administered by his mother, Jill, and a modest meal prepared by his personal chef, Jameel Austin, which included only a couple of chips. Residing in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with his wife, Larimar, and their dog, Presidente, Kerr trains at a high altitude of 1,626 meters (5,335 feet) and typically adheres to an early bedtime of 8:30 pm. His daily routine is centered around training and recovery, with a clear boundary set around 5 pm to allow for downtime with his wife before retiring for the night.

Beyond his athletic pursuits, Kerr enjoys audiobooks and podcasts, particularly those related to rugby and American sports, though he admits to a relatively quiet social life and limited engagement with nightlife. He anticipates that his recent achievements might increase his recognition back home, though he notes that Albuquerque is not a major hub for track and field enthusiasts.

Optimizing Performance Through Quality and Recovery

Kerr attributes his career-best season to a comprehensive team effort, including his coach Danny Mackey, personal chef, nutritionist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, strength and conditioning specialists, massage therapists, and pacers. Significant adjustments in 2026 have focused on enhancing training quality and recovery. This includes a daily two-hour rest period from 2-4 pm and the incorporation of red-light therapy. His weekly mileage remains consistent, around 73 miles, but the intensity has increased, with Thursday’s 10-mile runs now executed at a pace between 5:50 and 6:00 per mile, and Sunday’s long runs sometimes incorporating tempo efforts. Kerr emphasizes that this increased training load is balanced by a heightened focus on recovery, stating, “if you’re going to add training and load, then the recovery needs to be pulled from somewhere else.”

He places significant trust in his coach, Mackey, describing him as the “evil genius” behind the training plan. Kerr prioritizes providing honest, data-driven feedback to Mackey, believing that removing ego from the process is crucial for optimal planning and execution.

Future Ambitions and Reflections on a Career Journey

While acknowledging the possibility of breaking Hicham El Guerrouj’s 1500m world record of 3:26.00, Kerr suggests it is more likely to occur in 2027 rather than imminently. He cites the physical demands of his recent successes – winning the world indoor 3,000m title, breaking the mile world record, and securing Commonwealth gold within a short span – as reasons for a cautious approach. “I will hold the 1500m world record in my career. I can say that with a full chest. But I’m not in a rush to do that,” Kerr stated, emphasizing the need for strategic decision-making to avoid overexertion.

Reflecting on his journey, Kerr, who was not an early prodigy, highlighted the importance of long-term vision and consistent dedication. He shared the mantra, “no one remembers the Under-13 or Under-15 Scottish champion,” emphasizing the value of sustained effort and resilience in achieving ultimate goals. He believes that with determination, consistent training, injury prevention, and smart decision-making, aspiring athletes can realize their dreams.

Navigating the Sport’s Landscape and Financials

Kerr addressed the public discussion regarding the broadcasting of his Commonwealth Games victory, acknowledging the debate about free-to-air coverage. He expressed a pragmatic view, stating, “If we put performances together and the numbers are good, then we’ll get our spot.” He believes athletes must actively advocate for their sport and that deserving events will find their place on major platforms. Kerr sees positive developments, such as the increased prize money at the Ultimate Championships ($150,000 for winners), as significant steps forward, contrasting them with the stagnant prize money in previous decades. He also pointed to the challenge of ensuring top athletes compete against each other more frequently, particularly in the Diamond League, due to financial constraints.

He also touched upon the collapse of Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track event, expressing concern for athletes who did not receive promised prize money. Kerr, in a fortunate position himself, highlighted the precarious situation faced by less established athletes who relied on such events.

The Significance of the Podium Moment

When asked about the tears shed on the podium, Kerr explained they were a moment of reflection and gratitude. Amidst media inquiries about future records, he focused on appreciating the present achievement and the presence of the Scottish flag. He emphasized the need to “slow down, enjoy it, because we’re not guaranteed tomorrow,” a mindset he believes is crucial for maintaining his elite performance level and navigating the fast-paced world of professional athletics.
